new essay in the newsletter today—i've wanted to write about this for a long time, and i'm very glad to finally share it. (un)happy valentine's day!
WHAT IS THE POINT OF LUKEWARM LOVE?
IF I AM NOT DROWNING IN IT I HAVE NO DESIRE FOR IT

my dog will see a specialist vet next week. her breathing has not recovered and is still a bit labored, but she’s in really good spirits and is eating and lovingly pestering me as she always does. i am very much expecting the worst but trying not to cry through our remaining time together

i cried nonstop for five days with anticipatory grief but today i went onsite to work and got a little cafe drink and i’m feeling more like a person again 🩷 thank you so much to everyone who has shared kind words. i haven’t been in a place to respond but i appreciate them more than i can say!!

it’s funny being a person who’s good in a crisis because you can put me in a medical office/on the phone with medical personnel any day and i will be so composed and ask all the right questions. and then i’ll go home and cry so hard i give myself a nosebleed :)

(depressing background music) i have been thinking about this
According to the novelist Gaius Petronius Arbiter in the first century A.D., the Sibyl used to sit in a bottle suspended from the roof, and when someone asked what she wanted she replied, "I want to die."

feels silly to say i’m thinking about latin poetry at a time like this but i’ve had bits of catullus 3 running through my head all day. “he who now goes through that dark journey / from where they deny anyone return / …wretched shadows / of the underworld, you who devour all beautiful things”

got some really bad news about my dog today. i guess nobody expects it to happen to them but i really did not expect this. i brought her home when she was two months old and she turned 16 this summer and she’s my entire world. i’m so devastated i feel like my heart has cracked in half

this is the first book i’ve read all month and now i’m like My god…. Literature……..
None of it was real; nothing was real.
Everything was real; inconceivably real,
infinitely dear.
These and all things started as nothing, latent within a vast energy-broth, but then we named them, and loved them, and, in this way, brought them forth.

These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.
Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.

My favorite way to annoy other classicists is by referring to Cicero as Mark T. Garbanzo. It makes him sound like a small-town lawyer. Injured at Work? Extorted in Sicily? Call Mark T. Garbanzo!

sandalwood in perfume is the same as niacinamide in skincare. it ruins a perfectly good product. To Me
