ANTI-FLY GLASS (from 'The Place of Glass in Buildings' by John Gloag, 1943)
Snippet of text from page 71: "ANTI-FLY GLASS Tests have been carried out to discover the effect of different colours on flies and other insects. In these tests the flies were allowed to live under any colour they chose, and it was found that in general they preferred white light to coloured light and that red was the best deterrent, the other colours following in the order of the spectrum. It would be impracticable to use red glass owing to the loss of light. Yellow glass is almost equally effective. Although the use of yellow glass is not an absolute preventive, it is an effective deterrent, and is of value for use in connection with the storage of food. Yellow glass is not advisable in buildings where people are constantly employed, because yellow light is injurious to the eyes and general health. Apart from this effect of colour, it was found that although in warm weather coloured glasses acted as deterrents to flies, in cold weather they would rather be in a warm place, whatever the colour of the glass. A special amber-tinted glass which is an effective deterrent and valuable for use in buildings connected with the storage of food, is known as Anti-Fly Glass."
