Toffee mixture passed the cold water test. Side note: watching it crystalize like that is pretty cool. Even if it doesn't set properly, that was almost worth the price of admission.

Also I fully expect this first attempt to go sideways. Apparently my cooking thermometer went splut and didn't get replaced, so I'll be doing the cold water test to check for doneness. Goin' old school here!

I make a pretty decent homemade peanut butter cup, but I wanted to try something different. best part about making toffee so far? 1 pot and 1 dish to pour it into.

My other grandmother would make a hard candy called humbugs that was like a minty hard taffy. I'm not sure if anyone still has that recipe, but apparently it was super hard to make right and required the air temp to be an exact number.

When I was a kid, one of my grandmothers would make the most amazing fudge I'd ever had. We've got her recipe, but something is wrong in it, because it's never turned out right.
