Funky clouds over Sydney tonight.

OH NO, not a “gloating mob”! 🙄

I took the train from Brussels to Berlin on midsummer’s eve in 2024, taking my bike and sharing a compartment with 2 Canadians and a Dutch student. Armed with ear plugs and a bottle of wine, we all slept well enough… Cycling in Berlin is fun!

Leidseplein used to be a bit of a dump - like London’s Leicester Square, but with too many bikes. Now it is delightful, and… lizards! bsky.app/profile/hack...

Was it just me, or was the first full news week of 2026 utterly exhausting?
Anyway, here’s Zoe jumping in for #caturday to ask “whatyadoing”

Windows blown in, Truro cathedral roof blown off, thousands of homes without power… reports on the impact of #StormGoretti on Cornwall and the Scillies sound like a disaster movie.
(Meanwhile, here in Sydney, we’re preparing for the hottest day in years and cataclysmic fire danger…) #thisisfine

This used to be *7* lanes of traffic. Your streets are not set in stone. Change is possible.

Making George Street a place for people was the dream of Professor Jan Gehl, backed by the City Council and delivered by the State Government. There was a big push back on plans, but *look* at the outcome!

Plan your city for people, and you get people.
Sydney pedestrianised George Street, controversially replacing lanes of traffic with a Light Rail line in 2019. The city has never looked back.

I didn’t post these photos earlier because we have been experiencing a tragedy in Sydney, and I’ve felt very distracted. To counter this, may I share that the community vibes at the opening were immaculate - 1,000s of diverse Sydneysiders all enjoying space together. That’s what cities are about.

Sydney’s new “GreenWay” opened on Sunday, and it is marvellous! A 7km traffic-free link from Sydney Harbour to Botany Bay, filled with art, nature and epic playgrounds for kids.

Our neighbour’s little kids were up until late last night, screeching up and down the back lane on their scooters with chalk. Look what greeted me this morning! 😍

I spy with my little eye, a new Parramatta River Class ferry, “Jack Mundey”, being prepared at Glebe Island…
(A most worthy recipient for a ferry name, IMO.)

Nosferatu's fingers, the Eye of Sauron and a self-fluttering American flag all get name checked in this review of a positively ghoulish building. Gross!

The new cycling ramp on to the Sydney Harbour Bridge is tantalisingly close to being completed - and beautiful. Such a light structure, which touches the ground lightly too. All those “what about the park and heritage” arguments that naysayers put forward would appear to have been unfounded… 🤷‍♂️

I only just noticed this hero, living in the future, on his e-bike with a surfboard rack on the side. 🏄‍♂️ 🤙

Good news! Not only is Sydney’s new Oxford Street cycleway doing numbers (3,000+ trips p/d) the other *five lanes* of traffic everyone was *so worried* about appear to be *just fine*(!)

“In plain English, Ford’s government is once again trying to handcuff cities and erase years of progress on making roads safer and more livable.”
