Overall, the ‘Bicycle Street’ option is the better outcome, offering a calmer street, more trees, and more car parking, while also delivering a safe environment for people biking.

Council points out that 11,000 cars drive along Wellington Street each day, and 88% aren’t stopping in either Collingwood or Clifton Hill, i.e. they’re through-traffic.

Calling all data people! Pls help! 📈📊

AustRoads released their star ratings for road design last week. But some roads that have a high star rating for design for vehicle occupants have really terrible “fatal and serious injury” stats.

I want to know how often these depart, and where.

Today Melbourne Water has released maps showing which properties are at risk of different depths and speeds of floods, if Yarra is exposed to a severe climate induced rain storm.

Such storms dump so much water they overwhelm any drain.

Car culture thrives on all-or-nothing thinking.

Dedicate some part of the road to bikes? “You’re basically banning cars.”

Safer speeds? “Oh yeah let’s all travel 5 km/h.”

It’s like asking a child to clean their room and they respond dramatically “so you’re kicking me out? to live on the street?”.

Some politicians will say out loud that road deaths are the cost of doing business. MPP Ric Breese at the Bill 212 committee meeting said that we would need to slow cars to 5km/h to avoid all deaths, and of course we can't do that, so "there occasionally will be injuries".

Violent crime is more rare, shocking, headline-grabbing. We treat it as an intolerable aberration from the norm. And we should! But that suggests that road deaths and injuries are the norm and are therefore tolerable. No politician will say that out loud, but watch what they prioritize.

The problem was that Councillors went about it in the wrong way, spending ratepayer funds on a probable loss at VCAT instead addressing the underlying issue of poor parking management.

On 23 September 2025 Council’s Planning Decisions Committee (PDC) refused an application for a planning permit mainly on the basis that the proposal failed to provide enough off-street car parking. By rejecting the application, Council sought to protect residents from commuters.

WHAT IF WE HAD POLITICAL WILL? Transportation dollars are scarce, but a new progressive mayoral administration can make a big impact without breaking the bank. Here’s my list. 🧵

Would you like to see more services on the 506 bus route, which goes through the north of Yarra? If so, consider adding your support to this petition: www.parliament.vic.gov.au/get-involved...

Did you know that we have about 10,000 drainage grates and pits in Yarra? Our streets form part of our stormwater drainage system, collecting water from adjoining properties and directing it to drainage pits and pipes which connect into the Yarra River.

Local streets in built up areas can be 30 km/h, where they have "a high proportion of active travel":

"As a minimum requirement, every school must have a school speed zone on any road with a school gate, typically up to 200m either side of the gate."

One of the decision making principles is community wellbeing: "Safer speeds can increase the opportunities for children to walk and cycle to school, supporting healthy and active lifestyles"
