In the Shade of Trees, Streams Come Alive
Forests near and far contribute to stream health. A tree planted miles away can still support water quality — if water flows from it to a stream.

DYK only ~400 people in North America hold #SFS #taxonomic certifications? In our newsletter this month, we explain why it matters. #taxonomy #biomonitoring #environmentaldata #macroinvertebrates #waterquality #watermonitoring
Building Scientific Rigor Through Certified Taxonomic Expertise
Taxonomic certification administered by the Stroud Center is the gold standard, with certifications in aquatic invertebrates, diatoms, and soon, fish.

Great work by @marcpeipoch.bsky.social, @riverscience.bsky.social, and #ScottEnsign!

Where does suspended algae come from? These authors use concentration–discharge (C–Q) relationships to find out. Check out the latest publication in #FreshwaterScience

Thank you to @lelanargi.bsky.social for examining hydropower from a unique angle. This article may have you thinking about dams, fish, and turbines in a new way. #freshwater #hydropower #fish
lelanargi.bsky.social
Huge numbers of fish that need to travel to the ocean to grow or to spawn are chopped to bits as they travel through dams fast-spinning turbines. A new turbine design aims to change all that. My first story for Anthropocene Magazine www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2025/05/fixi...
Fixing Hydropower’s Deadly Spin Cycle
Dams are great for the climate but fatal for some fish. Here’s how that could change.

its #sturgeonsaturday!

did you know that some sturgeon make very long spawning migrations? Similar to salmon, some species of sturgeon migrate hundreds of miles from the sea to rivers to spawn

after navigating a long journey once they are in freshwater they will release millions of eggs! 🧪👩🏻‍🔬🌎🌐
