I don't know... I think film noir kicked on in 1950s... One of my faves is Kiss Me Deadly (1955), Hell Is A City (1960)... Then come 1967 you're into neo-noir with Le Samourai (1967) ... and then 1973's masterpiece The Long Goodbye... Although some argue film noir isn't really a genre ;)
