This feels relevant today

So much affordable housing development is reliant on federal funding, but California can’t depend on DC for a steady stream of funds anymore. To make campus communities affordable for low income students, faculty, and staff without federal money, we need to remove barriers to building.

Trump wants California's higher ed system to fail. For the sake of our state, it has to succeed. That means making sure that students from any economic background can afford to attend college—which means building more student housing.

If we wait for a better budget situation to address the student housing crisis, we'll be waiting for a long, long time, longer than students can afford. AB 893 from
@asmmikefong.bsky.social provides a pathway to build affordable student housing near campuses with $0 required from the state.

Land near college campuses in California is overwhelmingly zoned for single-family only development—which students can't afford. Allowing more multi-family in campus development zones will help alleviate the student housing crisis. studenthomescoalition.org/research

This. When families can’t afford homes and students (including students with families) can’t afford rent near campus, there’s no reason to be taking a victory lap about the state of California’s economy

Commentary:

This paradox calls into question whether GDP is the best measure of financial success for state policymakers. If we’re first in homelessness and first in the cost of everyday goods, does being fourth in GDP matter? buff.ly/oVkuxMv

Having the fourth-largest economy doesn't matter if Californians can't afford essentials | Opinion
Californians face high housing, health care and food costs. For most people, surpassing Japan in gross domestic product doesn't matter.

At the CSU and CCCs, where the vast majority of California college students study, both on and off-campus rent poses a significantly higher cost barrier than tuition. Supporting education means supporting housing! t.co/ROloOMFkfW

Our student housing study found that while on-campus housing prices are consistent across the UC, off-campus prices vary with local market conditions. Allowing more housing near campuses through reforms like AB 893 will reduce costs for students.
