A good deal of nose.
It just seems inevitable.

One of those weird things I do is check in on the Deep Space Network as I find watching us still communicating with the Voyager spacecraft to be oddly comforting and uplifting.

Just imagine how beautiful this wreath would be without them? As is? Ruined.

Because I'm sure everyone was dying to know just like me, I asked ODOT about the Tombstone traffic camera and received a thorough reply indicative of that camera's beloved status:

Yes, I have screen caps of a traffic camera. Look at this lovely scene. Even though they cut down the tree in front a few years ago it's still lovely. I am not alone; this camera has a fan club. Why would they get rid of it?!

Setting up a tent on this hill.

Almost tossed an old greeting card but decided to check inside and found old photos from a lifetime ago. If someone takes you to Chimney Rock State Park, your answer to their first question when you arrive had better not be, "Oh, I've never seen it."

That's been rectified many times over, btw.

Nice of Photos to pause reminding me of my dead cats and plants I've killed to ask me if I remember this day five years ago. Gosh no, nothing comes to mind.

A red-breasted nut hatch sat on a rhododendron nearby watching what I imagine was its entire winter food stash go crashing to the ground. There's also a very chonky squirrel I imagine is quite miffed (it was in a walnut tree nearby and is, at least, physically fine).

I'll never get to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc so I watch a bunch of elite athletes run it instead. I mean, come on...

Do not have great conditions for growing dahlias, but I try a few each year. New one this year for me is Rip City. It's struggling but making a great effort. Doing my best to deter the earwigs but they are BAD this year. Before it gets chewed up:

The original house owner was one of those burn and bury your trash folk. He hasn't lived here in fifty years, but not all piles have been found. Today's was under the one bearded iris cluster I'd yet to dig up and divide. If I'd used a trowel instead of a shovel I likely would've missed it.

Federal lands in the US include Department of Defense, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fish and Wildlife Service, plus more.

It's all of the red bits, which is why it's particularly bad for the western states.

Let's just take a quick trip to the basement...

After the county dug out the ditch I'd slowly filled with seep monkeyflower over many years, sixteen months later it's filled with all the tall grasses, thistles, and one little bunch of monkeyflower. Phew.

(Foxglove pops up everywhere, though I try to yank them before they go to seed.)

Another trip to Washington. Last time it was a new human baby. This time, two new furry babies. The biting kind...

Any tree people? This Japanese maple popped up in the landscape many years ago but struggled (deer) to get any headway. I threw it in a sheltered pot and forgot about it. It took off. The leader has forked and with our heavy winds I'm worried it'll split.

Rendering? But that's what it actually looks like. They did, of course, leave out what it looks like just a few blocks south in an area actively under construction.

To my knowledge, there has never been a white bearded iris on this property. I've never introduced one, and all of the irises have been thinned and divided many times over. Yet, out of nowhere, this fucking diva....

I know they're pink, but I just love these tulips (surprise tulips from a few years ago). Thankfully the deer chomped them before the flower stalks appeared.

Last year's surprise bulbs have finally made an appearance. I'd be more excited but, well, pink....
April 26, 2025 at 5:18 AM
Once again, when planting out new perennials last year, I uncovered some old bulbs very deep in the ground where bulb plants had never grown (that I anything to do with). Shoved them in the dirt elsewhere in the garden to see if they'd come to life. A few did.
