This is a perfect distillation of why our country is in the mess it’s in and who is complicit in that mess: the Tory party, its backers and their rightwing media apologists.
Power has not been held to account and, oh my god, isn’t the country paying heavily for that?
Extract from article: While there are some honourable exceptions to this rule, it has become increasingly apparent to me that far from holding the powerful to account for their actions, most political journalism actively involves protecting and co-operating with that power. That this is the case became particularly apparent over the past 15 years, during which the vast majority of British media organisations wholly failed at their supposed job of "holding the powerful to account". Whether it's the ruinous decision to cheerlead for a decade of austerity, the failure to explain the obvious and likely impacts of Brexit, or the decade-long championing of a known liar whose unsuitabilities for high office were apparent to anyone who has ever worked with him, these years have been an object lesson in how most political journalism protects, rather than scrutinises, power.
