Next time someone says they don’t have to apologize for being white anymore, ask them to tell about the most recent time they were forced to apologize for being white and who made them do it.

You can do a lot locally with a dedicated group of 15 to 40 people. Regular people should be thinking at that scale rather than at the scale of thousands.

For years now, moderates have decried the division of identity politics of Democrats, ignoring of course that the Republican Party was defined by identity politics itself — the identity of whiteness. Now that it’s explicit the inability to call it out and to cover it aptly is starkly disappointing.

The winning argument for Dem leaders could be "they want to fear monger about trans people and trans healthcare because they don't want to talk about why your life isn't as good as it could be and have no plan to make it better" — except that most Dem politicians also have no plan to make it better.

Congratulations, those of you who decided to platform fringe voices and create a climate of fear and hate out of ignorance because those voices insisted a non-problem was a problem. They're now on an HHS stage trying to ruin children's lives. You will live with the harm you have done forever.

it is terrifying and awful that this passed the House with any Dem support at all (and once again, the continued leadership support for Cuellar is unconscionable)

call your senators and make absolutely sure this dies in the Senate, lives are on the line

trans people deserve so much better
Henry Cuellar, Don Davis, and Vicente Gonzalez joined Republicans in voting to criminalize trans health care.

The bill passed only 216 to 214.

4 Republicans voted no. If they did too, it would have failed.

The fact that Americans think we were starting from the “good place” or a “halo” is PART OF THE FUCKING PROBLEM

OH MY GOD I CAN NOT

we can say Trump is wrong without lying and glazing the horrors we have done and compounded for DECADES
“.. We have shattered the halo that has existed around the United States for much of the world across the eight decades since World War II .. closing our doors to the world’s brightest .. by embracing corruption in government ..”

What I'm saying is that this 37% group can be *defeated*, but there is zero historical reason to believe that it can be *won over*.
While we were watching Ken Burns’ “American Revolution,” my husband said more than once, “How did we ever win?” That’s often how I feel now. But the closing lesson I got from the documentary is to persevere. Day by day. I have faith we will emerge from this darkness.

As w/Reconstruction, it's true that the CRM produced a period of greater equality, but in both cases, white conservatives maintained militant opposition to equality & the rule of law. No evidence that this ~37% eventually came around. Came to the suburbs, sure, but never to democracy & equality.

The same might be said for the era of civil rights rulings & legislation in the 1950s-60s. White conservatives could have just accepted equality. Instead, they largely destroyed or re-segregated public resources & fought relentlessly to destroy legislative CRM victories.

If there was ever any moment to abandon the racial state, it would have been in the aftermath of emancipation. And sure, some ex-Confederates said they were sorry when they thought there was a chance they could be tried for treason, but immediately turned to creating a Klantation landscape.

My guess is that no amount of hardship, suffering, or deprivation will convince this 37% to abandon their commitment to white supremacy. I hope I'm wrong, but all of the historical evidence points to the contrary.

As was clear during Trump 1, roughly 37% of Americans are committed to white supremacy &/or Christian nationalism, no matter the cost. Very much reminds me of the Reconstruction South, which doubled down on the plantation regime that had destroyed the country in the aftermath of emancipation.

The thing about having to constantly present data & narrative debunking the administration’s lies about deporting “criminals” is: when did we accept that deportation is meant to be a tool of further criminal punishment, either after someone has been punished, or instead of any due process at all

You give 50k substacks and no consequences to people who never ever cite an immigrant or a Black person
