As the subtitle of my book indicates, The Scene of the Voice responds in part to the dismissal of language by what has come to be known as the affective turn in recent scholarship in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. My framing of its argument in terms of the question of ChatGPT’s “voice” in Part 1 of this two-part blog post is to suggest that The Scene of the Voice’s response to the affective turn applies just as much to the phenomenon of generative AI that currently enthralls both popular culture and the knowledge industrial complex called higher education.
