How can we care for candidates during the academic hiring process? In all the talk for taking mental health seriously, this is an oft forgotten area in academic departments.

Oh boy do I have *thoughts* on academic job hunting, institutional processes / practices, (lack of) care and candidate wellbeing.
surabhishukla.bsky.social
What are your thoughts? Here’s one: candidates should be informed of the reasons for their rejection. Something specific they can work on instead on going mad trying to work out why they weren’t selected. No chickening out by saying- lots of applications, can tell you why you weren’t good enough.

Controversial human rights issues—abortion, surrogacy, queer rts, etc., spark passionate religious and cultural debates. How do they shape court decisions in secular democracies? I explore this in my upcoming book, With God as Our Witness, and I enjoyed debating it at NLSIU. Thank you! #law #lawsky

Almas Shaikh’s paper showed how the current reservation law misses the most disadvantaged groups 🚷
surabhishukla.bsky.social
Mihika Poddar’s paper was about dismantling the preconceptions that many have in the caste reservation debate, that caste certificates are actually very easy to obtain. She showed us the bureaucratic detail involved in them, which was eye-watering 👮🚔🗄️📑

@surbhikarwa.bsky.social took us through the debates on women’s reservation in the Constituent Assembly to show how they conceptualise equality, explaining the formal equality and indivisibility discourses that predomainted the discussion 🟰🚺

@rishikasahgal.bsky.social focussed our attention on the administrative processes that regulate a right to housing— notice, hearing, and engagement, and made a case for how courts have a regulatory role in this process🏘️

@rupavardhini.bsky.social 📝 clarified the semantic confusion on language debates in constitution making.

@surbhikarwa.bsky.social and I organised a workshop on ‘Contemporary issues in Indian Constitutionalism’ 🥳 An absolute delight: sharing our work and feeding back into each other’s papers. By some fortunate accident, it was an all women’s forum. As accidents go, I couldn’t have planned it better!

Thanks SJ! What did you think of the turn of events?
surabhishukla.bsky.social
Sometimes, but only sometimes, two wrongs can make a right. Based on an erroneous definition of transgender in a prior case, which was then codified, the Kerala High Court has found that intersex children cannot be subjected to surgeries based on parental consent alone.
