yeah my personal (not fully considered) MO is: don't buy their stuff and don't talk about their work at all, until they die. after that it's at least ok to speak about their work and what it means you again imo (except maybe if the estate is still shitty? idk haha it's messy)

personally i would make a distinction because the author is contemptible, alive, and actively abusing her wealth and influence. even so there's a conversation to be had about assigning your morality to the author also (as a pretty big h.p. Lovecraft fan this is something i struggle with for sure)

they like that there are no black people, no women, they like the "retvrn to nature" vibes, they like that there's violence, idk! the book is also just really good and they probably read it when they were 11 just like me!

im annoyed at my past self for writing "actual miyazaki movies" instead of "miyazaki-directed"... i didnt mean anything by it, but i wish i wouldve used precise language. esp when he did a ton of work on whisper of the heart
