I am grimly pessimistic about this from what I know of Hindutva voters. They knowingly want this. There’s an underlying appetite for cruelty that drives far right voters, as long as it is directed elsewhere and which they experience as an affirmation of their status as insiders to the body politic.
I wonder how many Dutch voters fully realize that what ICE is doing in Minnesota is *exactly* what Wilders (and van der Plas, Baudet, Eerdmans etc) would like to see happen here. It’s a free preview of what far right government actually looks like.

You don't really understand the USA's language of "liberty" until you understand that 60 years ago they invented out of whole cloth the legal concept of "qualified immunity" to protect armed police from any consequences of their violent actions.
telling the secret police they have immunity to harm & kill citizens really lays bare the hollowness of decades of right-wing GOP screeching about encroaching Big Government - it was never a problem they had with government per se, just that it wasn't being used to harm the people they wanted to

People try to ascribe motives, strategy and logic to Trump but it's not acknowledged nearly enough that he's simply a spectacularly stupid man who happens to be extremely rich and entitled with it and therefore has gained a lot of power.

He's a very clear example of the Dunning Kruger effect.

TRUMP: Who said that?

Q: The premier of Greenland

TRUMP: Well, that's their problem. I disagree with him. I don't know who he is. Don't know anything about him. But that's gonna be a big problem for him.
