The spectral properties of rhodopsins may shape depth distribution.
(Extra note) Carotenoid antennae seem unique to Flavobacteria PRs. These PRs may have evolved to rely on carotenoid binding. In other words, carotenoid-bound PR is their true native form.

3. The usable spectrum extends to shorter (blue) wavelengths, meaning these bacteria can still capture light near the bottom of the euphotic zone.

2. H⁺-pumping rhodopsins (PR) with carotenoid antennae not only expand the usable wavelength range but also accelerate the photocycle!
