i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

Why is this year like this? Needless death and suffering everywhere you turn.

There has been a decent amount of legal wrangling over the role of copyright in the AI era, but the mother of all legal teams may now be gearing up for a fight.

1/ It was the height of the pandemic, but Phoebe Putney Memorial had good news: At 99 years old, Maude Burke was the oldest COVID-19 patient they were discharging.

In a video, staff waved balloons, celebrating Burke beating the disease.

There was one issue: It wasn’t true. 🧵

both flu and covid are starting to increase right now, due to the colder weather and the intergenerational mixing during thanksgiving. federal, state, and county health depts. are still tracking this stuff. not a bad idea to buy a bunch of N95s or KF94s with a comfortable fit for the winter wave.

Y'all my mom's home attendants have been taken down by the flu. Mask up and get your flu shot. It's insane out here.

Reminder that not only do library systems have physical media (& many also lend tools, electronics etc), your library card may give you access to streamers Kanopy and Hoopla. We just watched Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Rainmaker via a hoopla the other night. Pretty good!
“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”
The Last Video Rental Store Is Your Public Library
Audio-visual librarians are quietly amassing large physical media collections amid the IP disputes threatening select availability.

Happening now: Texas leaders announcing a rollout of a statewide program to put TPUSA chapters in high schools and colleges across the state. Gov. Abbott adds that schools that stand in the way should be reported to the Texas Education Agency.

THREAD: It was supposed to be a routine surgery. So when the doctor stepped out, Sandra Parker wasn’t sure she heard right.

Her husband’s heart couldn’t have stopped for more than 5 or 6 minutes, the doctor was saying.

“That’s not a lot of time,” Mrs. Parker thought. “Is it?”

I think the reason why there is such a focus on the evils of "work for hire" in comics (instead of voice acting, etc.) is that you can no longer put food on the table with comics. These characters are bringing in millions while their creators cannot pay for groceries or rent.

Or funeral expenses.

Prospero is in Honduras for a reason. Balaji Srinivasan’s “school” is in Malaysia for a reason. Social media misinformation operations set up shop in The Philippines for a reason.
Where are the tech bros going to find the people to underpay to do the jobs neither they nor their AIs can do I wonder?
