We’ll be in the room next week as diplomatic discussions on #AutonomousWeapons begin at #UNGeneva. States will be discussing the Chair’s rolling text – which could form the basis of a treaty. They must maintain the integrity of the text and move toward negotiations. Time is running out. #CCWUN

This week, Thompson Chengeta co-organised a workshop on autonomous weapon systems for African Missions to Geneva! What a wonderful opportunity to mobilize buy-in for the development of an African Common Position on autonomous weapons.

I finally got around to reading @markkersten.bsky.social 's thoughtful article about genocide being a process not an event. As he says, "genocide is not time-bound", it can unfold over months, years or decades. This is so important to keep in mind in the current sensationalist media environment.
Very glad to see my article, "Genocide is a process, not an event", in the Globe and Mail's print edition this weekend.

Watching the stories coming out of the 2025 Liberation Movements Summit, what strikes me most is the sheer fetishism that Southern Africa has for the past. We are disembodied and nostalgic, it is a dangerous thing to be.

The New York Times interview with Peter Thiel is so interesting to me on so many levels. Most starkly, it highlights how insidious wealth can be. The irony of the entire anti-risk rant is that Thiel stands the most to benefit from an erosion of existential risk as an academic field & tool of enquiry

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first 100 days have passed.
But the first hundred days is a political measurement tool taken without any criticality and transplanted into African politics. How useful of a tool is it? Or is it another example of isomorphic mimicry?
