We were pleased to be part of this important discussion. Scotland has opportunities to use tax tools to shape policies and deliver public services that better work for women.

Women – particularly single mothers, disabled women, and minority ethnic women – continue to face deeper financial insecurity due to rising costs and caring responsibilities.

These inequalities are long-standing and structural — not individual failings.

The survey also highlights the gendered nature of unpaid care.

Respondents reported doing an average of 26 hours per week of unpaid care work — compared to 17 hours by their partners.

Those providing more care were more likely to feel financially worse off (73%)

4️⃣
To manage costs, 57% of women have cut back on food spending — limiting the types of food they buy or switching to unbranded products.

This rises to:
🍽️ 82% of single parents
🍽️ 74% of minority ethnic women
🍽️ 63% of disabled women
swbg.bsky.social
3️⃣
When asked why they feel worse off, the top reasons were:
🥫 Rising food costs (74%)
⚡ Energy bills taking up more income (55%)
🏠 Increases in rent or mortgage payments (28%)

Everyday essentials are stretching budgets beyond breaking point.

💷 66% of women told us they feel worse off than this time last year.

That rises to:

82% of single parents
71% of minority ethnic women
70% of disabled women

Women on the lowest incomes are being hit hardest by rising costs.

1️⃣To mark #ChallengePovertyWeek, we’re launching our first Women’s Survey Briefing focused on women’s finances in Scotland.

The findings paint a stark picture of the cost of living crisis and its gendered impact. 🧵

(1/3) 📢 We’re proud to add our voice to the Women Against the Far Right Scotland by signing the open letter rejecting the far right’s racist rhetoric which only seeks to exploit violence against women to fuel hate and division.

Women against the Far Right Scotland
We reject the far right’s racist lies about “protecting” women and girls. They are not defenders of women—they exploit violence against women to fuel hate and division. Standing up for women’s rights ...

📢 We’ve published our response to the Social Justice and Social Security Committee’s Budget Scrutiny 2026-27 inquiry.

Key messages:
🔹 Social security can be a preventative measure with long-term benefits
🔹 Thresholds risk creating cliff edges that harm those just above them
