Taking a seven year old on any walk is the exact same experience as an old MMO escort quest. They walk painfully slowly and every fifteen seconds you realize you lost sight of them because they pathed into an enemy encampment (stall that sells $27 bubble wands).

Power level to me feels like something about relative strength of the enemies than any sort of mechanical flexibility. That said, I'd take a look at the 4e-style combat engine in Strike! which has lower HP caps, reduces the damage numbers to flatter values, and is relatively divorced of fluff.
