Reminder: We are seeking TWO Postdoctoral Fellows for conservation research of the critically endangered Vancouver Island marmot: a population & habitat viability modelling & a conservation genomics position in partnership with @unbc-nresi.bsky.social More info marmots.org/recovery-eff... #consgen 🌎
A Vancouver Island marmot pup watches you intently. What are they thinking? Are they thinking about how much they need YOU to apply your incredible research skills to saving their species? No. At least probably not. But they do need it, even if they are not thinking it. Is this a fantastical and highly inaccurate description of the inner monologue of a small marmot really "descriptive alt text?" We think so. For the record, the marmot is resting its forelegs on a surprising diamond shaped rock, both on a larger moss covered stone with grasses in the background.

One of the coolest ways to learn #RStats by doing is swirl (swirlstats.com). It's a free R package that runs interactive lessons right in your R console, letting you practice as you learn. I loved it when I was starting out! #datascience #rladies

There is a very significant chance that the entire Research and Development program at the US Forest Service is going to be dismantled in the coming weeks. This is going to be devastating and will hamstring our ability to manage public lands and the wildlife that depend on them.

Folks are telling me that archived doesn't necessarily mean cancelled, but also that panel this year has been cancelled. I haven't been able to get in touch with the program officers yet.
taaltree.bsky.social
Ugh. I heard today that LTER was archived, but it's not cancelled. It sound like you know this for sure? I have a very sad postdoc right now that I'd love to give some hope...

Such a bummer. I'm assuming this means there is no hope for current proposals.

The Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases NSF program has been archived. Huge loss. Does anyone know if the current proposals in the queue for funding will not be reviewed or are panels still happening?

That’s so funny. I had exactly the opposite reaction. I thought it was great to engage with disagreement. Maybe they’ll go home and think it over and their perspective will broaden. Plus there was a lot of support
taaltree.bsky.social
I get that. Any one of us over there will do little, but I wonder about the whole community pushing back to sway narratives, thoughts, ideas, and so on. But you're right, the experience there is poor
taaltree.bsky.social
I accept that. I'm not active there, or here really, any more. But I really want to fight right now, so maybe I'll try to make the case for science over there. Perhaps social media is not the way, but I can't help but think that if we were all back there fighting, it would be a start
taaltree.bsky.social
I really don't know. Someone just came in my office crying that they are losing their job, possibly the whole coop unit. I want to fight and this is not a good place to fight. This is a good place to console maybe though.

I fear that, especially now, scientists getting off Twitter where we can engage with the general public and instead siloing ourselves here is a very big mistake. We need to share what we do and why it's important with the broadest possible audience.

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Week 2 of tracking Deer 665's fall migration. She made a rather large movement during the first couple weeks of November. Many deer often stopover before leaving the foothills and heading south to winter range. Will be interesting to see if 665 does the same.
