There's so much nuance to this and I strongly recommend you consult a podiatrist before going off of anything I have to say here, but hopefully this helps folks be more conscious of their foot health and avoid some unnecessary pain in the future!

specifically address issues with arches, heels, and gait - you can get custom-made ones from a podiatrist too. All of this combined with a little bit of physical therapy will hopefully get my foot health back where I want it and keep me moving in a more healthy way for many, many more years to come.

but I'd certainly go with slimmer soles in a shoe I walk in daily. You'll see in the second photo that I'm also playing around with insoles for flat feet to put in my daily walking shoes, which have also been replaced with some more foot-shaped ones. There are tons of insoles out there that

the toebox is on the Altras - my toes can actually splay out and articulate in them. The Asics have a slight heel while the Altras have no elevation in the heel. The Altras are also much more flexible. I still have some cushioning in these shoes as they're running shoes for higher-impact activities,

Here's a list of things to generally prioritize for everyday wear, taking your particular needs and use case into account:
1. A wide, unconstricted toe box - your toes should be able to splay out a little as you step
2. A flat sole instead of an elevated heel - look for zero-drop shoes

Navigating this can be overwhelming, but it's up to you to determine your needs and sift through the marketing jargon out there. Even if you find that you need a radically different approach to footwear, you may still need to gradually adapt your footwear rather than diving into the opposite

weakened arches or strained feet can benefit from more cushioning and structure. Also, certain athletic activities often require more specialized shoes to offer additional stability and reduce fatigue and strain - I don't think I'm going to be backpacking in flip flops any time soon!

Thankfully, someone mentioned in the comments of one my videos that my feet look like they were developing bunions and sure enough after a visit to a podiatrist, I was diagnosed with the early stages of bunions and flat feet.

It's a bit bigger and thicker than a typical prayer rug, definitely seems to be designed to be used as a decorative rug, but it could be used as one!
