Cheers @spitfirefilly.bsky.social, here's to #Victory and #TheFew and thank you for speaking at the Dinner Night!

Today is the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and we paused to remember #TheFew at a superb Dinner Night last week. Awesomely evocative speech from @spitfirefilly.bsky.social really made the night. Reminded us how much we owe them all.

It’s early in the academic year, but I may have peaked. Yesterday, I led on the delivery of a new @warstudieskcl.bsky.social course, Strategic Intelligence for Senior Executives, alongside Emergent Risk International. Engaging F2F with global business leaders was informative & huge fun.

Interesting lessons from the Korean War for current 🇷🇺🇺🇦 conflict but I think the parallels with Dayton 🇧🇦 90's peace talks are most pertinent in this pragmatic #telegram from @dsorennie.bsky.social Continuation of the conflict: 'peace by other means' neatly sums it up.

Telling detail in @dsorennie.bsky.social’s
column. “Fully 45% of American casualties [in the Korean war] occurred after talks began. Veterans recalled deadly night-time skirmishes on hills overlooking the floodlit negotiation compound.” www.economist.com/internationa...

Really interesting article from @ProfPaulPoast.bsky.social in the @WPR.bsky.social recently. Interesting because he highlights that all three 🇬🇧🇺🇸USSR were required to defeat Nazi Germany (and poor strategy/timing from Hitler) and I suppose it does still matter; national pride but also as a lesson?
profpaulpoast.bsky.social
Who contributed the most to defeating Nazi Germany?

- 🇬🇧 bought the most time
- USSR shed the most blood
- 🇺🇸 provided the most arms

Why does it still matter?

Because claims to global leadership are grounded in historical narrative.

Trump and Putin Are Both Learning the Wrong Lesson From World War II
The U.S. and Russian governments argued last week about who should get the credit for winning World War II. Both have the wrong takeaway.

Timely article from #Charlemagne, and whilst there are benefits from specialisation by #NATO member states, fundamentally:

'Burden-sharing means everyone must have skin in the game, including a fair share of the dangerous bit.'

Thank you for sharing @shashj.bsky.social.

"What is worse, Mr Sánchez’s idea is premised on a fallacious notion: that NATO countries abutting Russia need to invest in tanks and infantry to be shot at, while those further away do their bit by running IT helpdesks." www.economist.com/europe/2025/...

Trump administration is shutting down centres of US information influence, Voice of America and others (Radio Free Europe, Free Asia, etc.). Giving the field to other States. The USAGM in charge is going down. Risk of massive and irreversible damage to US influence.

If you think you understand nuclear deterrence read this, and then you will see what it actually looks like, the practicalities and limitations for 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇺🇸and #NATO. Another highly useful and insightful article from @shashj.bsky.social in the @economist.international.

In this week’s @economist.com I write on how Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk have in recent weeks dramatically revived the debate over European nuclear deterrence in a world with less America. What are the options for Britain and France?

Europe thinks the unthinkable on a nuclear bomb
Poland wants co-operation with France on a nuclear deterrent. That could take many forms
