Any Coloradan will tell you the eastern part of the state is “Kansas” so this tracks. I don’t know how I feel about “Jefferson” for redwood country though - I’ve never heard that?

(psst Dante is the name of the author and should not be italicized. Sorry but it was really bugging me while reading this but also lends fault to the writer for not following up on what works of Dante their New Yorker book club was reading- all of it?)

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

“I think folks in Chicago want to feel free and safe to walk around and be able to visit and explore without fear of being attacked, assaulted or otherwise victimized,” says the man responsible for the people attacking, assaulting, and victimizing Chicagoans. 🥴

When will ICE leave Chicago? The field director says there's "no end date" for Operation Midway Blitz. blockclubchi.co/47dQfqH

My understanding is it’s a “double tap” - they think you’re passing your card to a friend. I mean, 18 minutes is excessive though!

I sincerely hate the framing ”majority of the electorate” and “public opinion.” Where does this info that almost all Americans hate trans people come from? How are polling questions worded? Are they based on phone polling ffs?? Why is this just being accepted as true?

The Democratic party’s progressives seem determined to re-educate the public rather than compromise for their votes, Jonathan Chait argues:
Democrats Still Have No Idea What Went Wrong
The party’s progressives seem to think the problem is not with their platform but with voters.

How is that Victorian on Wellington going to pass a building inspection? The upper deck and that second floor supported by porch columns have me going 😱

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

Could part of the problem be that this reality TV celebrity numb-nut doesn’t understand the difference between campaigning and governing? He’s always campaigning and never anticipated, learned or cared about the second part.

Trump, speaking to the U.S. Navy: "I wanna thank a group of women from North Carolina...This is number 151, you could call a 'rally.' This is sort of a rally. Let's face it, this is a rally."

Listen, the five-hour train to Detroit sometimes gets stuck behind freight trains making it 6-7 hours. Sometimes you don’t want to deal with that.

I’m told ICE attacked us—despite us being off the street, courtesy of the state police—to create a spectacle because Kristi Noem was present today. Here’s some footage of her and her team on the roof of Broadview. Everything is content creation to these fascists.

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

omg I need a critical analysis of the music on reality TV these days. The music alone is making many of the shows insufferable (the content has always been insufferable yet guiltily watchable)

There's so much to unpack -- his childish understanding of the world, his raw nerve of grievances, his sociopathy -- but I can't get past what a whiny, pathetic loser you'd have to be as president to stamp your little feet and cry that the media isn't "allowed" to be mean to you. Mom said so guys!

I feel you. I take comfort in the thought that it’s human will to persist. Humans have already survived a lot! I can’t imagine how people felt during World War II for instance but I’m glad people kept having kids because we wouldn’t be here!
