Marble sculpture of a handsome young man who seems to be in despair. Having long, curly hair, he is naked - his body somewhat athletic and very beautiful. He’s depicted sitting cross-legged on a stone, bent over, - deep in thought - looking down at his hands, his fingers entwined. When a plaster model of this sculpture was first exhibited, it was given the title, “Nothing ever lasts in this world but pain” - a quote from the Italian poet Petrarch. As said in our main post, We don’t recall ever seeing this when we visited the Musée D’Orsay many years ago. But they have such an incredible and enormous collection, it’s impossible to see everything in a day. It may be possible this sculpture was not on exhibit there at the time. We can only think this might be the case, as this is something so extraordinary, so moving and so beautiful, We surely would have remembered it. ~tamisar💞

Hello!🥰A vignette of a #robin on our old bird table last December. Of all the #birds that come to our #garden Robins are most bold. Here one’s looking right at the📸before grabbing some food. This table would soon fall apart-see ALT-but we had another. #photography -my partner. ~tam💞 #Garden4Wildlife
A small orange/red-breasted European Robin - very different from the large American robins I grew up seeing. But these tiny birds are both beautiful & very cheeky. They have white feathers just below their distinctive, orange-red breast. Their head, back and wing plumage is mostly a brownish-grey. They are extremely territorial & will even pick fights with their own reflection if they see themselves in a window or outdoor mirror! Here this robin is perched on what was left of a dilapidated bird table, the wood already gnawed at by squirrels and so weather-beaten it was falling apart. We took it down not long after this, as -fortunately - we had another one. This one, though, was under our Winter-flowering Honeysuckle tree, many branches of which are behind the robin. In the background is our side fence, stained green by a type of fine moss which grows like a fine patina on the wooden fence. On the table itself are dried mealworms and buggy suet pellets- the latter a favourite food of all the birds that visit our little garden. That suet - and keeping birds supplied with such food - is especially vital in Winter, when most shrubs & plants are bare, dormant or otherwise not drawing much in the way of natural insect foods. The fatty suet helps to not only feed but keep birds a bit warmer thru the bitter cold. Please Garden for Wildlife, however you can. With habitats disappearing because of humans’ constant paving/building/destruction, wildlife need all the help they can get, especially in Winter. If you do have room for a birdbath, it’s just as important in Winter: they still need fresh, clean-preferably unchlorinated- water daily, even on early mornings/days when it means breaking up thick layers of ice and replacing/topping up the water often. A bee hotel-placed out of direct sunlight-helps overwintering, solitary bees not only to shelter, but to lay single eggs and seal up the holes with mud: their cycle of Life. 🙏Garden For Wildlife if you can. ~💞

Closeup of two new pink Queen of Sweden rosebuds, one in the foreground just starting to open, a second behind it still budding, its green sepals having split to reveal its first hint of pink. This photo was taken by my partner yesterday, after she snipped them & brought them in before last night’s sub-zero temperatures set in. Again, these are so late & thus an unexpected treat. The dark green leaves, a bit mottled, are blurred in the background, as she tried to focus on the flowers. -tam💞 Closeup this morning as one of the late-again surprising-Queen of Sweden roses has begun to open up. Even tho a bit spotted by a greenfly we caught on it last night, it’s still lovely. What a treat, to have roses still blooming in such chilly weather, so late in the year. But these would have frozen to death had they been left out on the rose bush overnight: the temperatures here dropped well below zero Celsius & were still that cold this morning. And though we’re due for a slight rise in temps the next few days, we’re so glad we saved these from the freeze. The Queen of Sweden is a David Austin Rose & ours has been going since we planted it almost 2 decades ago, the year we moved into our tiny “terrace” house (that’s the same as a townhouse in the US, though ours is very narrow & just 2 stories). With careful pruning & deadheading, it’s given us hundreds of gorgeous roses over the years, with a wonderful fragrance. The only downsize to this variety is a significant one, though: its petals are so many and so tightly clustered that bees cannot access any pollen or nectar from them. We didn’t realise this when we bought this shrub in an end-of-season sale at the local garden centre. But their beauty, fragrance and continuous blooming has given our small front garden so much, otherwise, we’ve no regrets. And besides, since this rose was planted, we’ve planted a lot of bee & butterfly friendly shrubs, flowers & bulbs, adding to a few that were already just barely growing in our small back garden, but have flourished under my partner’s care. We try as much as we can to Garden For Wildlife. Bees, butterflies, moths, snails, worms, birds & so many forms of Wildlife -every one playing vital roles in any garden’s ecosystem - need all the help you can give them, as habitats disappear and/or change in Global Warming. Even if all you can do is have potted flowers, a dish of water & even a bee hotel (out of direct Sun!) any/all of these things help so much🙏-tam💞

A view from one of two balconies of the 30th floor high rise apartment where We lived for a time. On this morning, clouds had rolled in from the Arabian Gulf, covering the city. In this shot, a golden Sun is rising just above the clouds, painting the sky above in soft tones of almost smoky peach. Below, like a misty, deep blue blanket, clouds obscure all but the tips of the tallest building cranes - vague, peculiar parallel shapes criss-crossing just above the thick fog. What a sight and how strange it felt looking out from our balconies to find ourselves above the clouds… All Photos© taken by tam’s partner. ~💞 In this photo, the clouds are slowly descending, so we can now see some of the large buildings down the street, as well as further away. On the left is a narrow high-rise that appears turquoise in this strange morning light. Just behind that - and taller - with 4 roofed towers at each corner, stands a grand hotel. Low on the left is a smaller building - can’t recall what that was but it may have been low-rise apartments. On the right, further away, is what we knew as this city’s World Trade Centre, tall, white and slim, with a slender antenna tower extending from the top of its roof. By the next photo, you may guess where We all were living…Photos all ©taken by tam’s partner. ~💞 By this point, the mists were truly descending and would soon dissipate. But not before We got this photo of the buildings right across the street from us: known then (perhaps still known) as The Emirates Towers. They’re uniquely shaped (as so many more high rises in the process of being built would be…and dozens built since). But these are truly unique as they are actually a pair of triangular towers. They were such iconic buildings at the time, standing out as they did, unusual & apart. Far below the clouds, these triangular buildings had beautiful gardens we visited. M’s & my introduction to the Middle East and Arabic culture came very quickly and was quite remarkable: a colleague of my partner invited us to her Bridal wedding reception. It was as Muslim wedding receptions were there - separate from the groom’s reception, no men were allowed anywhere (M’s invisible presence proved fortunate😉). Even the male band which played music were screened off from seeing the huge ballroom full of Dubai’s elite women. Alcohol free (a blessing, really, as I was and remain a recovering alcoholic) the reception served up freshly pressed fruit juices, Arabic tea, an incredible array of extraordinary foods (including camel, which I politely declined); the place was scented by rich, perfumed smoke from oud, brought to each of us at the tables…entertainment provided by a troupe of young women with ankle length hair doing beautiful “hair dances.” It was one of the most memorable events of our lives…and happened less than 72 hours after my arrival from the 🇺🇸. Any doubts or ignorant fears I may have had about suddenly living amidst this culture, so different from my own…and mere months after 9/11…were swiftly dispelled. I can honestly say We have never been to any Wedding reception more extraordinary, unique, lavish, beautiful and welcoming in Our lives. It opened our eyes in so many ways. That reception was held in a ballroom of one of these buildings… -tam💞 Photo©my partner Here’s a view of part of the city of Dubai on a☀️day, photo taken fr/one of our two balconies. It shows an expanse of mostly white buildings of varying heights, most a few stories high then. As always, many were in the process of being built. I’ve never lived anywhere like this: each day it seemed another building was starting to be built-sadly all by poor labourers who came to Dubai from other countries, hoping to send their meagre earnings back to their families. They toiled through punishing heat in harsh Summers & were bused to & from labour camps. These are things I only truly understood later, after we’d left Dubai & came to live in my partner’s home country🇬🇧. But here on this sunny day from our balcony we could see, in the distance, near the beautiful turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, two minarets point upward from the enormous & beautiful Jumeirah Mosque. It was one mosque which opened briefly to the public-I think one day a week. We always wanted to go, but never managed to make it there. Dubai was & remains a strange city of contrasts, super-rich & very poor: the local Emiratis, many expats fr/other Muslim countries; as well as lots of British & Australian expats…& 100s of labourers from poor countries-that part of life there remains shameful & sad. But We do have fond memories of this place: the best food any of us have ever eaten we had here. So much beauty to be seen, with that gorgeous turquoise sea lapping white sand beaches. I met many wonderful Arab women there who were more friendly, welcoming & interesting than most of the British & Aussie expats, who frowned upon any place/event that didn’t involve alcohol & actually turned down their invitations to wedding receptions for that reason. We experienced a 2nd extraordinary Bride’s reception-held on an enormous, old boat that cruised Dubai Creek at night: again, We were so warmly welcomed by strangers. Photograph of two Queen of Sweden Roses, now wilted, shrivelling and faded. I took this with my iPad - just as I did the overhead photo of one of these in full, glorious bloom, several posts down our feed. This is what that lovely rose - and its companion - look like now. The bluebell wood, forest-path background is just my lap-tray, on which I placed the small jar that served as a vase for these once beautiful pink blooms. We were lucky to catch them when we did, so late in the year. But we couldn’t expect them to last forever. They seemed the epitome of today’s haikufeels prompt word, which was “fade.” Faded now, indeed…but we’re thankful for that last glimpse of beauty they brought us. -tam💞

This photo-taken in 2005 by my partner-shows two beautiful white Swans swimming gracefully along a branch of the River Avon, which runs through the gardens of a private estate. The foreground is clipped green lawn, with some tall-leaved water plants peeking up all along the edges. But across the river it’s all lush-a large plant spreads wide on the right hand side, its leafy branches dipping into the water. Just behind that is a lovely, medium size Weeping Willow, its long strands of green leaves spilling over from its crown like tresses of leafy hair. To the left there’s a small tree that appears to be in bloom, its white flowers look like a bouquet atop a narrow trunk that’s protected by a small wooden fence. Behind that small, flowering one are yet more trees-including a large pine or perhaps yew, we think. That whole area on the left, in back, is like a mountain of dark green, full of trees that seem to blend into one form. Coming back to the river, just beyond the swans, there’s a fence made of wooden beams that bends around, following the river bank, presumably to keep visitors from going into the river. The water is shiny, rippling; it reflects the swans in a glimmering path of white that begins where they are and crosses the width of the river to the side We were standing on, the grassy foreground. It was then such a beautiful & peaceful place. As I said in a previous post, within a couple years, all this would be swept away by a series of terrible storms, which rampaged through here & the Japanese Garden area especially (which is just beyond the righthand side of this scene). The rain-swollen river & powerful winds brought down so many trees & changed this part of the gardens forever. We visited once before that happened. But next time we went it was💔to see how much was destroyed. While we knew they’d do lots of replanting We never returned: prices shot up….& the rich landowners always seemed unwelcoming…It would never be our beloved💚refuge again…💞

Roger Dean’s exquisite cover work for Relayer is best described in the Wikipedia article, under the section “Artwork.” Tbh, although I find his creations among the most gorgeous works of art produced in my lifetime, I’m at a complete loss when it comes to trying to describe them. So please look to that “Artwork” section for what details it does give of this extraordinary album cover - one of so many Dean created for Yes. He may well be my favourite “modern artist” - or illustrator, if you will - ever… -tam💞 The lyrics to “Soon,” Jon Anderson’s tender, beautiful coda to The Gates Of Delirium’s brilliant, tumultuous, heart-rending, violent chaos of War. The preceding music so realistically and gut-wrenchingly captures the sequence, then horrors of War - its latter part reverberating, haunting echoes, as if one is standing high above, seeing the terrible cost below, stretching for miles all around - the fallen strewn across the battlefield…And then, like sunlight piercing through the smoke and horror, here comes this keening, tender song, so beautiful it makes me cry, every time. I find The Gates Of Delirium even more relatable today, for it evokes the chaos engulfing the world now…and when I listen to it, I hear what’s happening Right Now: the madness, the insanity of fascism, greed, war upon war, whole peoples being exterminated ruthlessly…the Hate, the horrors and utter futility of it all…it’s right there in The Gates of Delirium. And so now, when I hear the fragile strains of Jon’s coda, Soon, begin, I find I have been sobbing all thru the whole of it…and wishing with all my heart his plain words - a prayer of Hope - could come true…If only… 🙏🕊-tam💞
