The execution was better in the Pertwee years than in recent #DoctorWho but Malcolm Hulke would be turning in his grave if he heard anyone claim his work wasn't political. It so obviously is and was trying to be thought provoking and send a clear message

The man who created the Sea Devils was litreally a communist and his whole body of work is very overtly political and trying to send a message. Have you watched Invasion of the Dinosaurs? It has something very clear to say on the enviroment

I would compare it to Peter Davisons era in that it doesn't really work overall but you have some cracking standout episodes. Unfortunately the Davison era has the benefit of ending on the Caves of Androzani whereas the Gatwa era fell apart completely with Wish World/The Reality War

It tried to be too escapist when the scarier and more confined episodes are what makes #DoctorWho

Ncuti Gatwa is a consistent highlight and it has some very memorable individual episodes. It's the broader things that failed it. Terrible story arcs, poor character development, an overreliance on fan service and fantasy themes that got worn out very quickly

Doctor Who is a very different show in 1989 compared to what it was in 1963 but I'm not sure you can say the 2025 version of #DoctorWho is hugely different compared to the 2005 show

It's what has run the show into the ground in more recent years. It's failed to permanently reinvent itself in meaningful ways and has resorted to recycling nostalgia which is a poor state to be in

The show needs to be looking forward at the television and streaming world its surrounded by and Russell T Davies was doing that in the wrong way. He may have succeeded in individual episodes but he failed to pull off things that are essential in modern television

I loved a lot of the individual episodes and bold, experimental and inventive stories across the Ncuti Gatwa era, that's the stuff that was memorable. But the regressive story arcs and lacklustre character development is what failed it

It's been around for over 60 years and a few years break would do it good to re-evaluate where it fits into a modern TV landscape. Keeping going is just going to do it further repuational damage

I needed some distance from the show after that last episode to remind myself what I love about #DoctorWho. There were aspects of the last era that felt promising and interesting and I think I just felt disappointed that the era wasn't what I wanted it to be

I'm not saying we shouldn't critique the low points but #DoctorWho has always been a mix of good and bad stories and I always watch the show with that understanding. I also think there are broader issues but this is how I approach the show
