Radical-right parties are often linked to the “left-behind”. But supporting them when stigma is strong is costly. So who is willing to pay that cost early on, before it’s normalized?

In my new WP, I argue that breaking political norms is socially stratified. 🧵👇

🏗️ Building up our work in Spain with @luisaguado.bsky.social. In a country with high polarization, working toward social cohesion and democratic resilience feels urgent and necessary.

Stay tuned for our work. And to my academic colleagues: let's keep collaborating and building bridges.

🎓 I love academic work: the freedom, pursuing new knowledge, pushing understanding forward. But the challenge? Making sure that knowledge actually reaches beyond academia.

That's what excites me about More in Common. In this moment, we need more than research alone. We need action.

🆕💼 Today marks a new chapter: I'm starting as a Researcher at @moreincommonuk.bsky.social in Spain!

After 4 years working on my PhD, it was time for the next step. Grateful to my supervisors and colleagues, I learned so much and will miss working alongside them.

The AfD qualified for three mayoral run-offs in cities in North Rhine-Westphalia today, and lost all by big margins. The lesson is not that we have overdone the AfD's rise, but that we do perhaps sometimes underestimate the counter-mobilisation effects - including in east Germany, incidentally.

Trains are being nationalised in the UK. Didn't know that would also apply to airport trains. This whole process flying a bit under the radar it seems? This should be a major policy win for the left, but the government is mostly busy talking about something else.

In light of Keir Starmer's turn on immigration & debates in the UK about Denmark as an example to follow, I was invited by @ukandeu.bsky.social to reflect on what the research tells us about lessons to draw from Danish migration policy. Here's my take on the pitfalls: ukandeu.ac.uk/denmarks-mig...
Denmark’s migration policy – an example to follow? - UK in a changing Europe
Kristina Bakkær Simonsen explains why countries feel they have something to learn from Denmark's strict migration policy, but argues that there are many key pitfalls.

Worrying development in the Netherlands.
leoniedejonge.bsky.social
Anti-immigration demonstration in the Netherlands escalates. This is exactly what happens when far-right ideas are tolerated and normalised over an extended period of time. The far right gains confidence and grows, both at the ballot box and in the streets.

Anti-immigratie-demonstratie Den Haag escaleert, confrontatie met politie
De actievoerders steken vuurwerk af en zwaaien met Nederlandse vlaggen maar ook met prinsenvlaggen.

1/ How does migration affect political attitudes? Using 380k obs from 104 sending & 28 receiving countries, @filipkostelka.bsky.social, Nicolas Sauger & I find some migrants’ attitudes align with locals, while others exceed origin-host context, reshaping ideological space.

However, empirically, Vox got the best results in April 2019 in the richer neighbourhoods of the cities, like in Madrid.

Difficult to test the idea of the reference group with the available data. Collecting own data and experimental work would be ideal.

Thanks, these are very valid points. Theoretically, I agree that the cost might be lower if the stigma is weak in the reference group. That is a concept we use in another working paper about norms in Spain. Nonetheless, I doubt they are completely unaware of the social norm at the broader level.
tarekjaziri.bsky.social
Thanks for asking. I do not find any differences among Vox voters regarding political interest, talking about politics, or following the political campaigns between April and November.
tarekjaziri.bsky.social
Thank you! The availability of variables does not allow for direct control of political efficacy, but I do control for political interest. Moreover, among Vox's voters, there are no differences in talking about politics, political interest, or following the campaigns between April and November.

Really good and really really interesting.

To a large extent, it goes against my expectations, and yet it does cover it's bases well enough that I may have to accept that maybe norms are a bigger part of the far right story than what I initially thought.

Cool work! The League in Italy has historically been the party of small-to-medium Norther Italian businesses so annecdotally the argument checks out.

Also speaks to the evidence of this recent paper:

And a big thank you to colleagues and friends who gave feedback along the way. Their comments made the paper much stronger, and the process much more enjoyable 🙏.
