I loved reading this. I grew up in Kurdish areas and the traditions of the Jewish community are not so dissimilar to the old village woman tradition that lives on.

Yup. Iraq did it under Saddam Hussein too. Wrote a grad school paper with that gem in it... In fact, pressure to improve "good" gene families is one of the semi-standard tag-alongs to genocide.

It will smell like fragrant herbs when you wash it for weeks. I like the smell. It smells like festive days and women-only gatherings.

Also, yes, henna does leave a slight rosin coating behind. And if you've ever tried caring for hair in a Middle Eastern desert environment, you appreciate the protective coating.

Yeah. I had a hunch that would be coming back in the fall. I haven't heard of it happening yet, but I do think churches should be prepared.
