I say this very respectfully. Some psych patients who are not all there anymore really put all they have left towards the most creative insults.

A patient gratuitously told my colleague he looked like a slimy, obese toad that died of heatstroke on the sidewalk... we almost peed ourselves lol

My lab just turned 3 and I'm so proud of us 🥹🎂

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

Yes, and that can be in the form of a question...
"Can the authors clarify why...?"

Some people answer this by clarifying in the letter but not in the manuscript, which is the issue I'm talking about.

Hum are you saying the review isn't a way to provide feedback to the authors? Anyway, my point is that a question from a reviewer is almost never idle curiosity.

And when it is, they usually start with something like "just for my personal knowledge..."
tattooed-bug.bsky.social
That's a very odd take. I see excellent reviews every day that include very pertinent questions.

He reminds me of someone I used to work for. That guy would be super loud about crazy ideas, then realize in private how crazy they were and just abruptly stop mentioning anything related to them, hoping everyone would think it was a collective hallucination lol

And I know this is obvious to some people. But it needs to be said for more than half of our submissions, so clearly it's not understood by all.

So yep, when you get a question that makes sense, your answer should be: "This is the explanation, this has now been clarified in the text as follows." 😊

Friends in Academia, when a reviewer asks you a question, it is almost always to point out that this information is missing or unclear in your manuscript. They're not trying to personally learn more about your topic, so they don't really care about your explanation if it's not reflected in the text.

But then if I had responded the way I really to respond, I'd be the villain lol.
So I just sighed and laughed.

I gave a talk about a tool we developed that has brought us DOZENS of collaborations. Someone came to see me afterwards and asked "in my view, this thing you developed is quite useless, so am I correct to assume that your entire research is just a mental exercise with no translational impact?" 😅

I know grown adults who don't think this deeply 🤣

"Mmh sometimes I think moms and dads don't think too much about if they want to have kids. Maybe they think it's weird if they don't."

Parents now are so good at encouraging kids to think critically and express themselves. The result is amazing.

I think one of Ezra Klein's big problems is that when he says "doing politics" what he actually means is content creation

Kids are amazing.
My friend's kid just asked me why I didn't have kids. I said I love kids but I'm a solitary, introverted person, so I don't feel like having another person in my space all the time.
You know what this 8yo responded?

When it comes to far right ideas, when they're given a platform, they're not just words. The sanguinary and mephitic legacy of Jean-Marie Le Pen has damaged France more than you could ever imagine, but people found comfort in the fact that he wouldn't be able to cause further bloodshed.

I just want to share how France reacted to the death of a far right leader. And they're not even claiming to be the country of freedom of speech. And yes, of course some people called it tasteless, but the government didn't respond with a systemic, violent repression of free speech.
