Liking does nothing except tell the poster you liked it.
If you want other people to see a post you liked, you have to boost it.

I assume you're looking at the "Discovery" feed.
You can train it. Every time you see a post you don't like go to the post menu and select "See less like this".
It's also helpful to tell it what you do want to see.
It's not instantaneous but it does work, eventually you won't see posts like that.
