Trying not to be off-putting, but I’m only human

Movie thoughts for the week:
- SIN CITY is great, but you can definitely see why iterations like the sequel & THE SPIRIT fail
- FRANKENSTEIN looked great, but making the creature basically innocent is a choice

MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Dustin Pedroia has a similar case to David Wright. His career was sadly cut short, and he needed 3-4 decent years more to be seriously considered for the HoF based on career or peak stats. He doesn’t even comp well to Utley, who is a borderline 2B case. Another no.

MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
I like David Wright, but he just doesn’t have the career or peak numbers. If there is a good comp to a HoF 3B, I’d consider him, but I haven’t found one yet. Even comparing him to another high peak contemporary (Andruw Jones) does Wright no favors. A reluctant no.

MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Mark Buehrle. Similar pedigree to Andy Pettitte, but a bit less in every category. He was a key player on a beloved World Series winner, but only has 30IP in the postseason. BUT! He has a no-hitter & perfect game. I’d vote to keep him on, due to Pettitte comps.
November 19, 2025 at 10:09 PM
MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Jimmy Rollins. Far below career & peak WAR, with below-average career & peak OPS+, despite some impressive counting stats. After age 30, he hit like a glove first sub, but was actually no longer good in the field. I say no.

MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Omar Vizquel. Fuck this guy.

Before his abuse was publicized, I was supremely annoyed by how many people went “durr…Gold Gloves” & saw him as HoF material.

Very good fielder that deserved 60% of his GGs and contributed nothing else. And is a piece of shit. So no.

MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Andy Pettitte was never an ace SP, but he was a good 2-3 SP for a long time. A career compiler who fell short of the big milestones, career & peak WAR standards. I don’t think he should get in. BUT…
November 19, 2025 at 4:23 AM
Interesting HoF comp for Braun. Interesting that Allen had significantly more WAR despite some very similar stats.
November 18, 2025 at 8:09 PM
MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Bobby Abreu falls short of the career and peak WAR standards, but not by much. He’s had a very good 5-tool peak, and there are few non-HoFers with higher career OBP. I’m leaning no, but on a ballot like this, why not give him a vote and another chance next year?
November 18, 2025 at 12:44 AM
MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Ryan Braun was also suspended for PEDs, but his statistical case is much shakier. He’s pretty far below career WAR standard, and is slightly below 7-year peak WAR. He’s got 350HR, but under 2000H. Really, his peak was only 5 years. Not long enough.
November 18, 2025 at 12:21 AM
MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
Selection 2: Chase Utley

Another case of peak performance. Slightly below the 2B career WAR standard, but above the 7-yr peak avg. The best player on his team in both seasons his teammates won MVP, he was recognized as a top 2B (ASG x6, SS x4).
November 17, 2025 at 10:22 PM
MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
I don’t have and don’t deserve a vote, but I’d pick a few of these guys.

Selection 1: Andruw Jones

The man may or may not have died at age 30, but he had a great peak, has the hardware, has the rep, & ranks high for CF WAR.

Movie thoughts for the week:
- LADY IN THE LAKE has a gimmick, & it makes for some of the dullest cinematography around
- ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES is a top tier sequel
- for SCREAM’s plot to work, all adults must be pieces of shit. And it does work!

Kendall Gill’s large felt hat has returned! Long live style that is clearly appropriate for studio talking head work!

Movie thoughts for the week:
- THE MUMMY may be bad, but it’s great if you dislike Cruise because he gets the ever living shit kicked out of him throughout
- STUDIO 666 had a mediocre plot and amateur actors, but they spent their budget on quality kills

- PLAY MISTY FOR ME has one of the most unintentionally funny endings I have ever seen
- FREAKS has some legit great moments. An absolute crime that the original cut is lost to time.
- THE FACULTY was so much worse before I understood camp

Movie thoughts for the week:
- WAIT UNTIL DARK really nails the final act
- Ethan’s realization scene in M:I is the worst scene in the series
- ALIEN3 Assembly Cut? Slightly better than theatrical
- ALIEN: RESURRECTION fails, but in a weird & cool way

I have to admit that I liked PROMETHEUS more the second time around — it’s still pretty flawed, but at least it fails in interesting ways.

After some poor viewing decisions, I made a good choice and rewatched stone-cold classic ALIEN.

But seriously, the 2025 WAR OF THE WORLDS is awful and should not be watched by anyone.

This week, I watched my first Japan-made Godzilla movie since the original. I thought the satire was a bit much, but it’s an interesting contrast to the vapid GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE.

Googly-eyed amphibian proto-Godzilla was very funny though

I asked myself “What was missing from WOLF MAN (2025)?”

The answer came from EXECUTIVE DECISION: they should have cast Steven Seagal as a tough guy that eats shit and dies almost immediately.

BARBARIAN (2022) was great, but it sucks that they never issued a physical release. Fingers crossed that they’ll do a 2-pack with WEAPONS

I haven’t made the best choices this week.

PADDINGTON IN PERU was still very cute, but it stinks that King didn’t return to direct. That same screenplay would have hit 2x as hard if he helmed it.
