MLB Hall of Fame nerd thoughts:
The 2026 ballot is here! Looks like a relatively weak new class in terms of milestone stats & WAR, so maybe we’ll see a jump for some returning players.
The 2026 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot as announced moments ago by @baseballhall.org (baseballhall.org/news/2026-bb...). Results will be announced Jan. 20th. Game on!

“Big Waluigi energy” is a great call.

I don’t think the Cubs should spend their time/roster space on him, but I would not be shocked to see him on the Brewers or Reds next year.
Wrote about Dustin May's free agency, mostly because I can't get over the fact that he's got six years of service time already
In Order to Save Dustin May, We Must Destroy Him
There’s nothing major league GMs love more than a guy they can fix.

Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man is going into the public domain on January 1st in case anyone wants to make a horror film about an adorably drunk couple and their dog chasing, like, a killer clown or something.

Astonishingly, the ZELDA game franchise somehow managed to survive this launch...

Movie thoughts for the week:
- LADY IN THE LAKE has a gimmick, & it makes for some of the dullest cinematography around
- ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES is a top tier sequel
- for SCREAM’s plot to work, all adults must be pieces of shit. And it does work!

MLB Hall of Fame Nerd Thoughts:
The Contemporary Era nominees will be Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, Jeff Kent, Carlos Delgado, Dale Murphy, Don Mattingly, and Fernando Valenzuela.

Do any of these guys get in this year?

Chicago Cubs 2025-2026 offseason predictions:
1) Kyle Tucker signs elsewhere.

This one seems obvious. The lack of an extension has been news all season, & even with a disappointing 2nd half Tucker’s going to get big $$$. I’d love to have him back, but I doubt it happens.

Kendall Gill’s large felt hat has returned! Long live style that is clearly appropriate for studio talking head work!

The NBA can’t keep letting Josh Giddey get away with that spin move. Absolutely wild that is working.

Movie thoughts for the week:
- THE MUMMY may be bad, but it’s great if you dislike Cruise because he gets the ever living shit kicked out of him throughout
- STUDIO 666 had a mediocre plot and amateur actors, but they spent their budget on quality kills

- PLAY MISTY FOR ME has one of the most unintentionally funny endings I have ever seen
- FREAKS has some legit great moments. An absolute crime that the original cut is lost to time.
- THE FACULTY was so much worse before I understood camp

Movie thoughts for the week:
- WAIT UNTIL DARK really nails the final act
- Ethan’s realization scene in M:I is the worst scene in the series
- ALIEN3 Assembly Cut? Slightly better than theatrical
- ALIEN: RESURRECTION fails, but in a weird & cool way

The 2025 Chicago Cubs is dead and buried, so let’s see how my predictions for the season worked out
My predictions for the 2025 Chicago Cubs:
1) No Cub hits 30+ HR. Ian Happ led the team with 25 HR in 2024, but that feels like the upper range of his potential. Tucker will probably lead the team in HR, but I doubt he’ll set a personal record

What if MINORITY REPORT, but the hero stares at a screen for the whole movie like Ice Cube’s WAR OF THE WORLDS?

I wrote a 15 page paper on the symbolism in a 3-minute scene of FREDDY VS JASON. My teacher admitted he stopped reading after page 4 and just gave me the A because he saw that I was clearly going off (complimentary). GenAI could never.
I wrote a lit crit paper in grad school about The Anxiety of Influence, Elliott Smith, & and the Beatles and included a burned CD. GenAI could never.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

I have to admit that I liked PROMETHEUS more the second time around — it’s still pretty flawed, but at least it fails in interesting ways.

After some poor viewing decisions, I made a good choice and rewatched stone-cold classic ALIEN.

But seriously, the 2025 WAR OF THE WORLDS is awful and should not be watched by anyone.

I thought I was going nuts with no one referencing this 2019 report about Kawhi and Uncle Dennis making wild extra-contractual demands. Thanks to The Athletic for calling back to it today.
Improper requests, an investigation, and a superstar chase gone sideways: The untold stories from Kawhi Leonard’s free agency that left the Lakers fuming
Kawhi's return to L.A. included talks with both teams. What he was asking for could have lasting effects in L.A. and the NBA office.
