The mood board vs the book. Think summertime but make it dark (except for the one poem about living in the land of winter). Lots of water imagery: ocean, rain, storms, rivers, wells. Water is life, death, motion, change, healing, and transformation.

A mood board of nine photos. 1- rotting wood. 2- red thunderstorm. 3- person under the surface of the ocean. 4- a clear blue forest river. 5- an ancient well. 6- a flock of birds in murmuration. 7- a muddy puddle with ripples from the rain. 8- a colorful sunset seen through the windshield of a car. 9- a street lamp behind snow-covered tree branches. The cover of Mausoleums of the Eye and other poems by Clover S. Laurel. It depicts a large mosquito-like insect with green eyes on a blurry vintage-brown background.

WIP number 1 is a high fantasy with some dark elements (no pun intended since there’s elemental magic 😂)
WIP number 2 is a horror short story taking inspiration from analog horror and live action kids educational shows.

WIP number 1 is a high fantasy setting without a specific time period. There’s villages with crop farming and herbal medicine, so they’re somewhat advanced.
WIP number 2 takes place in modern day with social commentary about children’s entertainment and the exploitativeness of it.

It whispered of all your deepest fears.
Deep into the mausoleum, it led you astray.
As you take your last breath, you are sealed away.

Come forth, Baron Crescendo! Let your guitar split the sky open, for more wraiths to dazzle us!

Behold, a note from him, for you!

“The moment you entered the graveyard, the scrape of ancient stone shadowed your ears.”

Finish it! With word of rhyme, before we dance to the end!

#HorrorWritersChat
Art by Jelle Husson, featuring a haunted monastery of many sharp-tipped towers scraping at the midnight sky. The largest is in the centre of the structure’s roof, whose walls are painted white. The monastery is located above a hilly terrain of dark stone and dark green moss. A stony, twisting road leads to the monastery.

Question Four

There he is! Baron Crescendo! Oh how the skies split open to his guitar, how more of us fly in the air! And look, a note from him, just for you!

“The moment you entered the graveyard, the scrape of ancient stone shadowed your ears.”

Well? Go on! Word or rhyme, continue his Muse!

This question is tough because I love both. I guess I slightly prefer the folkloric kind because it gives us insight into history and what people of the time feared or revered. 🙂

Listen to the Symposium’s finest vocalist, as their tenor bends the living into unnatural angles and swivels them into the air! Tell us, what ghosts do you prefer? Of the folkloric tradition, or those invented by authors? And why?

It is always a delight to see our violinists perform! How the living bend their splintering bones as they float above us all! Tell us, our ghostly compatriots – which of us are better? Of the folkloric kind? Or invented by our shadowy creators?

Well, I titled my second poetry collection Mausoleums of the Eye and other poems for a good reason 😉
Jokes aside, I actually like when ghosts are found in unexpected places like a child’s playroom or a school. Places associated with youth and life turn into the realm of the dead.

Now, let us begin! Let the flutes bleat and the trumps blare, snatching all the souls of the living away! What are your favourite haunts? Mausoleums? Lavish estates? What secrets do their wraiths protect within?

A single line of a poem doesn’t give much, so enjoy the whole first stanza of my poem “Flock”, which is one of my favorite horror poems inspired by murmuration (the twisting flight motions large flocks of birds as they begin to migrate). This hypnotic sky dance fascinates me. 💕

I’m so behind, aaaaahhhh!!! My week last week was really busy, which is why I haven’t been keeping up with this. 😅 My coworkers went to a conference in Boston, so it was just me from Thursday to Saturday. It was rough 💀 and I didn’t get any writing done 😭

Sounds about right. Writers have to be micro-influencers shouting into the void constantly in order to get any notice of our work at all. Same with video game streamers. If you aren’t streaming at least 10 hours a day, you can never grow. It sucks.

The cover of Solitary Tree and other poems by Clover S. Laurel. It is a watercolor illustration that depicts a lone dead and twisted elder tree on a mossy hill. The background is white, which makes the dark branches stand out even more.

A poem I wrote after being cheated on. I wanted my anger to seep through the page and engulf the reader. I wanted them to feel how tight my throat was, how sick I felt. I hope I was successful.

A poem titled “Parched”. It describes an image of sand in the desert being likened to the “other woman” and how it is coarse and slips through the fingers and makes one choke. Meanwhile, the one being cheated on continues to feel the pain of the memory of the past relationship. Their soul is parched in this vast desert.

The cover of Basement Floor 2 by Clover S. Laurel. It depicts a dark, almost black, basement hallways with a concrete floor and tiled walls. These features are barely visible since the only light is coming from the elevator doors at the far end of the hallway. A small screen above the doors displays “BF-2” in blocky, red text. The title itself is on the basement floor, drawing the viewer’s eye there to see the red reflection of the letters, hinting at the floor being damp.

Ann Radcliffe eating hard cheese right before bed to give herself nightmares, Stoker claiming Dracula was the result of a nightmare induced by a “too generous helping of dressed crab,” let’s go back to the golden age of eating incredibly rich food before bed to create horror literature
