As an ordained Tendai Buddhist monk, this is where I see my practice evolving. Thank you for sharing. Compassion is a universal virtue that must be extended to all sentient beings. Especially those whose volition is impacted by the world that we humans have a disproportionate impact in shaping.

Yes. As a Buddhist monk who grew up in the Catholic Church, I have encountered this on both sides. From my perspective, the two are halves of the whole: knowledge and practice (the halves) unified are wisdom (the whole). Thank you for sharing this insight.

Yes. Perfect is an ideal aspiration, but not an ideal strategy or practice. Take the first step, make mistakes, accept that it is all part of the journey, and keep going despite it all. Progress is what really matters … and giving a sh*t enough to do something.

Carrot tops. Love them. Pesto is great. Ichimotsu zentai: use a thing entirely and waste nothing!

In Japanese there is a term “ichimotsu zentai.” It means to use everything and waste nothing. It starts with awareness and intention. This is a perfect example. Resources may not be unlimited, but resourcefulness is!

Though there are three poisons cited in Buddhism, I believe there is truly only one: ignorance, i.e. lack of wisdom. The root of which is the inability to let go of our beliefs. Thank you for this article. Gassho.

Went to Shigetsu myself in June 2024 after completing my training at Enryaku-ji's Hiei-zan Gyoin up on top of Mount Hiei. Transformative. If you haven't tried it, Vegan Ramen UZU is quite good as well. I believe they have a location in Koto City in Tokyo. Haven't eaten there, but Kyoto was great.
