Everybody in academia understands that being good is a necessary but not sufficient condition for getting ahead. You also have to kiss the right asses, early and often. If you doubt this, try informing your Ph.D. advisor that the idea they just got big funding for has major flaws #AcademicSky 🧪

The worst part about the fascist dismantling of academia is how unworthy of defense it is. There is so much bad faith and favoritism and straight-up dishonest greed. It really does need dismantling. Just not like this

I am not sure if we can ever break free of the pressure to competitively perform for our basic needs -- it may be completely baked in at this point but I guess I'm determined to find out

So much politics in my feed. I get it but we have to quit variously demonizing and lionizing politicians whom we will never even meet and focus more on helping people who are actually present in our lives through #MutualAid

The other thing we have to stop.doing as academics is churning out Ph.D.s In 2023 there were 57k Ph.D.s awarded in the U.S., which is sharply up from numbers more like 40k about ten years ago. Are job prospects better? Professors: if you want to do research, do it yourself.

higher ed will not survive in its current incarnation as the gatekeeper of class privilege. there simply aren't enough wealthy liberals, and it has long since alienated anyone else who might have risen to its defense
