anything that is art... is presumably about some certain thing, but is really always about something else, and it's no good having one without the other, because if you just have the something it is boring and if you just have the something else it's irritating.

Seeing my first hummingbird of the year, I was reminded of this favorite #birddivination. Available as a print at bit.ly/hummingbird-divination. See more of them and the story behind this labor of love at almanacofbirds.org

I don’t seem to have the attention span to read gardening. But a blooming garden is one of my happy places. So…I scatter random seeds—I liked the pictures on the front of the packets—the names of which I forget, water, and watch them grow. Occasionally I rearrange. Something pretty usually develops.

Hey guess what? I had this fantastic idea today: set up a Bluesky account. I set about the task and discovered to my amazement, that I’d already done this. Obviously it was some time ago and I’d forgotten… or I’m living some kind of Groundhog Day 😬

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.
