If I were to drop a zero off my rent it would still be more expensive than it was when I moved into this apartment in 2016
Sometimes I think people outside Turkey don't fully grasp how much the lira (TL) has lost its value over the past two decades. Even experiencing it firsthand I still find it hard to wrap my head around.

The price of a night in a simple B&B (pansiyon) in 2008 = the price of a cheap candy bar now. 🧵

Had to put down my only-sweet-to-me little gremlin of a fur ball cat, Çoşka, last night. She showed up filthy & meowing at my top-floor front door at the beginning of the pandemic—I let her in, she stayed, attacking my friends, peeing in the hallway & being a general menace, but she was a great cat

Out in fuller force today, really buttressing that integrity. All the teyzes are taking photos of them from their windows and shaking their heads
Haven't seen much on any social media about it, but the police are out in full force today to defend the integrity of the traditional Turkish family structure

I just renewed my residence permit in Istanbul. At the appointment instead of waiting in line for 3.5 hours, I waited 20 mins, and the my application was approved in 2 days rather than 2 weeks. Even the security could answer procedural questions. What's changed?

With some very rough math: ~630,000 passengers per day— assuming half of whom are flying into or in the country—I would guess at least two thirds of which would not heed the regulation, and with the estimated $70 fine, it could drag in $14.7 million (574.5 million TL) per day—if actually implemented
Turkish authorities say airline passengers who unbuckle their seat belts, access overhead compartments, or occupy the aisle before their plane has fully stopped now face fines under new regulations.
Turkey will fine airline passengers who unbuckle before the plane stops

Until anything tangible happens from either the PKK or Turkish state, I'm taking "the PKK is to disarm and disband, ending its armed struggle" the same way as when the the State says "we've discovered oil and gas deposits in the Black Sea that will power Turkey for a decade"

Exactly how many new eras has Turkey had in the past 20 odd years? I can't keep track
🔷Turkish President Erdoğan calls for a "new era" to rid the country of its burdens for stability, as his AKP replaces over half of its executive board to tackle the country's "chronic problems."

Territorial integrity is sacrosanct in Turkish state rhetoric, being terrified of losing land to an imagined Greek invasion, creation of a Kurdistan polity et al—same reason it sides with China over Uyghurs; cf. Kurds vis-a-vis Turkey & its vocal support for a Palestinian state yet no action for one
Turkey not being exactly a paragon of democratic liberalism, why do they find their strategic interests so clearly in backing Ukraine?
Erdoğa just threw down the gauntlet—Turkey backs Ukraine’s FULL territorial integrity.

Turkey ain’t just some side player in this. They control the Black Sea. They control NATO’s southern flank. And now, Erdoğan is making it clear: Russia’s land grab is not up for negotiati

Mulling over an idea that the current US era is a combination of middle-late Gilded Age (with all the bad & none of the good)—massive wealth disparity, corruption, prosperity gospel—& '60s cultural revolution in reverse—the kids aren't having sex, taking drugs, & don't understand realpolitik

I'm translating a late 18th century Ottoman work of fiction and am wrestling over whether I should keep the sentences as long as they are in the original to preserve its Ottoman-ness (which is fun to do) or if I should make it more accessible to actually try to be able to sell it
