Hah that's the comic I show my students whenever they tell me about this test.

How many trillions of dollars have been invested into this technology so far?
Google search for "austria hungary in space"

Google excitedly tells you about the 1889 orbital flight, and that by 1908 there was a Mars research output with 30 people.

I'd be so pissed if I were accused of being a lawyer.

So weird to think Marconi might have been inspired by the foundation of the Little River Band.

Always beautifully bittersweet to write an email like this to a student who I'll possibly never see again.

Must be windy in here, got a little something in my eye.
"Good luck! Please let me know how it goes, and just in case I don't see you again before you graduate congratulations - you deserve the success you've had in this degree!

Cheers,

Termy"

I vaguely recall someone wanting examples of toxicity on Bluesky recently. Wonder if telling a trans woman they can expect to be harrassed counts as a toxic response.
majaoeberg.bsky.social
I do find it hilarious how they immediately backtracked after this and deleted the comment
a member of bluesky saying "Yeh" in response to the above post, with a journalist responding asking to get their exact quote over the thread in which the bluesky member responds with "what" and the journalist then rephrasing the question only for the bluesky member to delete the entire thread

Ambiguity, which is always good, but also

Learning that Shostakovich saw Jesus Christ Superstar is kinda twirling me about at the moment.

(Not, alas, the 1992 Australian performance because the idea of Shostakovich sitting there watching Russel Morris and a bemulletted-John Farnham is too much.)

not the point, but my eye/brain plucked this phrasing out of its context and did something extremely funny
closeup of the image in the quoted post, highlighting the phrase: "shortly before he died (twice, on successive evenings)"

I can report that universities would happily develop the recipe for Soylent Green if somebody pays them. For some extra cash, they will also optimise the production process for you.

It is definitely true, I have progressively deprived manhood of manliness over the last decade or so (epsecially the last year).

BlueSky has "no input" (and the "careful" wording around what happens with user data) does concern me. And handwaving away issues with incorrectly tagging disabilities is problematic. I'd expect a bit more accountability.
termy.bsky.social
OBVIOUSLY with the scale of BlueSky, they'd need some sort of automated system. And that needs to be trained SOMEHOW (although, you'd hope, with the training data creators' specific consent). And there are always going to be problems. Imperfect solution in an imperfect world

But the idea that

Yeah I'd be horrified if I discovered something like this had happened to one of my students

(I *want* to say my uni wouldn't do this, buuuuuttttttttttt I didn't ever expect to see this from Newcastle or UWS really either!)
termy.bsky.social
Oh yeah definitely! Also you should eat if you haven't! Someone recently told me nutrition is important 💜

this issue away, say this is just the way it is, and then point out they provide no input on their own safety and security systems is pretty shit; to misquote Eric Turkewitz: outsource your security=outsource your ethics.

SO they admit that their system is biased against disabled people (and presumably against many other groups, see the work of OH ALMOST ANYONE worth listening to). They're also likeky handing over every image of my dogs I post here to some other company to do with as they wish.

That's been me 3 times in the last 3 weeks, which is usually a sign that either I am overly stressed at work, or my PARTNER is overly stressed at work since she's normally the one who notices first and reminds me.

Also I just realised I forgot to eat yesterday. Thanks.

Yeah IKR. I assume they're trying to hype up the drama e-sports style for the crowd, but it's just... urk. There are so many other options.
