History has taught me that some men are willing to burn the world if they think it will gain them one more day in power.

#books Not naming names, but most of you Tube/Tok author-influencers don't meet my standards and I find your prose pretty mid. Just saying. Don't act like you're hot shit by putting someone else's work down unless you think your own work is ready to take it. Do I have opinions on authors and books? Sure, I do. Some are legit targets, like…

A Work-in-Progress Inspired by Recent Events 19 January 1804 Paris, France "No. Absolutely not. I'm not putting my name to that." Joachim Murat glared over the expanse of the table at the man who was the First Consul of France and also his brother in law, Napoleon Bonaparte. The sheaf of paper lay in front of him, awaiting another signature. He leaned away from it, folding his arms across his chest as he settled into his armchair facing the desk's occupant.

Thanks to the Mango Mussolini, I’m now writing a Duke of Enghien story. I didn’t want to, but now it’s all I can think about.

I did not have “Let’s reenact the kidnapping of the Duke of Enghien but with worse optics” on my bingo card for 2026. But here we are.

It’s a work in progress, but isn’t everything? #personal #kindle #ereaders #digitaldetox How I spent my Christmas. I’ve been using Kindles since the first generation of them that came out in 2011 or so? I think. Anyway, I also remember being excited with the first generation of Paperwhites with IPX waterproofing. I know I bought a blue and a black one, not at the same time.

A 2018 #kindle, revived from the dead after being forgotten in a box for six years. No #amazon cloud nag, no AI intrusion. Just a dumb e-ink slab. Deregistered for six years, ancient firmware. Perfect.

The author and their publisher pushed the narrative this was a historically accurate HF. But if someone can dismantle it in the first three pages I don't think so. 👎
Winter 1792, executions were secular and displays of piety were considered a counterrevolutionary offense. That old woman would have been next to have her head in a basket. This author didn't even try to aim for accuracy. I won't name the book, you can figure it out.
How to get me to DNF your French Revolution historical fiction in the first three pages: an old woman with a rosary making the sign of the cross as the POV character mounts the scaffold to the guillotine. The chapter timestamp is winter 1792.

Camille Desmoulins: Too Loud, Too Ideological, Too French #parody #satire #penguinclassics #bookcover #frenchrevolution I got an Epub file that contained a biography on Camille Demoulins and some of his writings, but it didn't have a decent cover so it could look pretty on my Kobo e-reader. I couldn't find a higher res version of this image of Desmoulins, but it looks great with the Penguin Classics template!

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

Originally, it was supposed to be a nightmare sequence, but it was too linear and too clean for that. I have nowhere to put it, but it's too fun to simply toss out. Enjoy. “Put that away and stop sniveling like a woman, it’s embarrassing.”

History is Not Your Safe Space
One Size Does Not Fit All: Reader Spaces, Author Spaces, and Leaving Your Illusions at the Door #frenchrevolution #notyoursafespace #history #fandom #antishippers #genrefiction This isn't the satire as you're looking for. Every so often, I wander out of my little literary niche to explore the overgrown jungles of BookTube and affiliated echo chambers. Basically, I'm like a tourist in those spots: I might write a few journal entries on my observations of the locals, snap a few pictures, sample the local food and wares, and then head back to my silo.

The Classic Occitan Folk Song Lately, I've been working on a fic about the Napoleonic marshals before they were marshals, and the French Revolutionary Army circa 1793-1795. I've been having a lot of fun with Ai Vist Lo Lop, my mind imagining this particular version as an infantry marching song. It's been great background music as I work. Figure I'd share it with anyone who might be interested.

I've used him as a sockpuppet across multiple essays on this blog, and figure I maybe I should write about it.
