My latest column focuses on the unveiling of the #100Years100Faces centenary mural and why its most enduring legacy will be how it can inspire the next generation of young place-makers to pick up the baton and shape the next chapter in Stoke-on-Trent’s illustrious place story.

Priestley continued: ‘unless you are prepared to take a deep and lasting interest on what happens inside those ovens, it would be better for you to take the first train anywhere’.

Bottle ovens featured prominently in our application to become a designated World Craft City.

You might know I worked at Gladstone Pottery Museum for many years so I’d like to pay my respects to Fred Greasley who sadly passed away today. A volunteer since 1971 and one of the gang who saved and effectively rebuilt the place. A lovely man and a wealth of knowledge. RIP Fred mate.

With a nod to Stoke-on-Trent’s ‘Vis unita fortior’ motto, 2025 promises to be a year when we showcase our ‘United strength is stronger’ credentials. The #SoT100 centenary celebrations will give everybody permission to proudly do things they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do.

“A black and white teapot covered in whimsical abstract designs resembling fossils.”
“Though it's got a surprisingly modern look, this teapot was made in the 18th-century in Staffordshire—the heart of Britain's pottery industry. The area’s limestone yielded prehistoric fossils, and potters often turned them into whimsical motifs for teapots.” official museum photo, side view 2

*POTTERIES BOTTLE OVEN -what is it?- A complex, towering, bottle-shaped brick structure, up to 70ft (21m) high, once essential in the pottery-making. 4 main types. Each had its own particular purpose, but they all had the bottle-shaped chimney. Details here

Potteries born Terry Woolliscroft enjoyed a career in the ceramics industry. He now paints in his studio in the Staffordshire Moorlands. He paints landscapes and still life in acrylics and oils. He draws inspiration from the rather special landscape of the north Staffordshire Potteries
