Reading between the lines, I assume that this means the cards are no longer authoritative, once they’ve been “upgraded”. A server would have to respond with a balance and that would probably take too long.

We have two of these at the Transbay Terminal bus deck operator bathrooms. You enter with a code and press the big red mushroom inside to lock it while in use.
