I’d just like to add that part of what makes this important is that while economic anxiety can’t be transmitted by watching a bunch of TikTok videos, cultural and status anxiety absolutely can
"economic anxiety" as a theory of the electorate has such staying power because it's *convenient* for so many. it suggests strategies for political success that politicians know how to implement; it exonerates people of the worst outcomes; most of all it is *intelligible* to educated cosmopolitans

What many zoomers do not understand, because they’ve never experienced an actual bad economy or food markets characterized by anything less than extreme choice and diversity, is that being able to rotate cuisines nightly is a ludicrous modern luxury inconceivable for many Americans even 20 years ago
i think part of this is you are not always going to have something new and exciting to eat everyday? yeah, you will have to eat your leftovers! or freeze for a later date.

It's not like young people don't have plenty to worry about - fascism and climate change, plus just the usual human condition stuff - and of course there could always be some future collapse. But currently there's really no sense in which US youth are materially worse off than preceding generations

For the most part we evaluate the truth and falsehood of these things based on how often we hear them and whether we've heard them from sources we trust, and we've been hearing this line a lot from a lot of pretty respectable sources. It just... ceased being accurate, and no one noticed.

"Young people have it hard" feels right to a lot of people because it became a well-worn claim in the wake of the 2008 recession when it was sort of true - I mean, it wasn't 1932 but a lot of trends were headed the wrong way - but it has persisted for decades after when it's no longer true at all.

It is exhausting to keep up the pretense that the richest generation of the richest society in history, which has grown far richer even over the last decade, is constantly suffering in ways older folks can’t understand. They aren’t, sorry. Can we just be real here

I’m sorry that “Kids today have to grow up in a terrible world stalked by precarity” is a cliche that has bored into your brain but it is simply not true by almost any conceivable measure. They’re richer, they consume more and better, they have better leisure time, better health care, fewer wars.

By the way, a lot the (minor) decline in homeownership likely comes from the fact that households are smaller now than in the past.

That’s not true, homeownership rates are pretty much normal among young adults. The point here isn’t that zoomers are spending irresponsibly, it’s that zoomers are living extremely materially affluent lives.

By the way, people are saying “At least this will hurt Trump too!”

Maybe, but I wouldn’t count on it. Remember, this isn’t natural law, it’s a product of our own rhetorical choices. Biden was unpopular because people yelled at him. But the attitude towards Trump so far is “Let’s give him a chance.”
For the first time in history, each governing party in developed countries with elections saw a decline in vote share.

Inflation is a big factor, but I wonder if the rise of negativity as the go-to attention-grabber in today's social media ecosystem might also play a role.

Not one school shooter has ever been given the death penalty.

Not one.

U.S. government is seeking the death penalty for Luigi Magione.

Proving that one rich CEO is worth so much more in this country than any child.

Disgusting.

A LOT of extremely online leftism comes from the exact same place as extremely online rightism: the internet propping up a permission structure for adherents to indulge in whatever makes them angry, which, wouldn't you know it, is often "Things were better in the good old days and we must retvrn"
it’s fascinating to see supposed “leftists” exhibit the exact same reactionary nostalgia as conservative boomers
