every time I look at either of them I just think, the absolute minimum requirement for running for mayor of a city is that you LOVE that city. any city. but if it's NYC?? you better believe in your bones that it is the greatest city in the world

coincidentally one of my Always Mad things is that SOME high schools teach writing really well and SOME not at all, but colleges tend to assume someone already did that, and they assign a lot of writing but do not necessarily teach it

(i think freshman writing has improved since mine, but still)

I'm not sure I ever started a paper in undergrad more than 48 or possibly 24 hours before it was due

This was unhelpful in grad school, when I didn't have any better study skills but I was older and couldn't pull off that kind of energy

(yes I have done well on all my papers. this did not help)

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

on the one hand there are lots of untowered airports, there are procedures for landing at them, every pilot will know those

on the other hand airports the size of this one are ummmm....not typically untowered

I definitely wonder about length and genre here. Like, I would guess that readers classify long-form stuff more correctly, because I think AI plot or argumentation are more likely to fall apart at length. But if the genre is stackoverflow comment, I would not trust my ability to distinguish at ALL.

I've been trying to convince Mx18 that when they head off to college next year they should hit up office hours ALL THE TIME, so it's nice to hear enthusiasm from the other side of the table :) (like i know not ALL of the profs are like that but if they can connect with ANY it will help so much...)
