They never gave up on saving Estinien, since they believed he was fighting against the Wyrm himself. Once they knew he would be saved once Nidhogg was defeated, they were in it for victory.

However, the fight on the Final Steps of Faith started a tiny bit differently...
My hc/ lore of my WoLs of how the Nidhogg trial started. With this dialogue between my oc Amelia & Estinien - who was taken by Nidhogg's shade at the time. "We have gone this far! This close to settling the centuries-old clash of dragons and Ishgardians…" Amelia stomps forward, her heels thumping against the floor of the stone bridge. "Amelia, my love! Be careful!" "And I will NOT let all of our efforts get wasted!" Amelia casts her enchantment and throws a fireball at Estinien's face, completely disregarding her mate's warnings. The Azure Dragoon, now taken by Nidhogg, bounces off from the explosion. The hit was a direct one, yet nothing against the great Wyrm. Only seconds later, the dragon rises and snarls at the young Hyur. "You little brat! I will kil-" Nidhogg's shade gets cut off as he barely dodges another fireball. "As much as I dislike that dumb oaf, Estinien's ours. And I promise you, ol' mighty great Wyrm…" Amelia signals Hira and others to attack, then steadies her stance. "Once you're out of his body, I will skin you to make leather goods myself."
