Four perfect flowers of glaucous honeysuckle (lonicera dioica)
Four orange flowers of glaucus honeysuckle emerging with perfect symmetry in four cardinal directions. The long flowers are shown in contrast against the dark green leaves below them. Each flower has a trumpet-like shape which begins as a pale peach color and extends outward turning orange and red toward the pedals. The anther s of each flower extend prominently outward on fine yellow filaments.

Flowers of Scarlet beeblossom (oenethera suffrutescens) going off
Red flowers of scarlet beeblossom opened in full bloom on a vertical raceme. Older flowers near the bottom are a dark blood red and beginning to wilt, New flowers in the middle showing light pink with prominent white and yellow styles. The top of the raceme has unopened buds that look like tiny pink/green sausages.

March in Alberta still seems pretty dead and wintry, but there's green out here if you look for it!
Many long thin leaves of two penstemon (beard tongues), growing low under the brown and grey of last year's grassland. The penstemon leaves are light sage green with purple, waxy, and cupped upwards as they emerge from tight rosettes. The vibrant leaves of arctostaphylos uva-ursi (bearberry) with a mixture of green, yellow, and red colours, surrounded by dry, dormant grasses. Feathery green leaves of Geum triflorum (prairie smoke) grow flat against the soil under dry plant matter Grey-green clusters of tiny spine-like leaves of phlox hoodie (spiny phlox) on an otherwise bone-dry mound of clay soil

Been scouting out some unobserved spots for spring botany walks. Enjoying the prairie views and identifying the remnants of last year's plant populations... but I can't wait until things really get growing again. This spot is on an undeveloped road allowance with great remnant prairie ecology.

Story of an ambush, written in snow

Here's some nice Oxytropis borealis viscida (Sticky Locoweed) growing on a bit of sand in the ditch. Early June. Remnant native Alberta ecology.
A small population of sticky locoweed growing in sand near a tree root. Leaves are compound and quite fine, not unlike a carrot. About a dozen flower stalks with clusters of flowers that are a vivid mix of purple, pink, and bluea One flower cluster from above, grasped by a hand for scale. The cluster is just wider than a thumb, with a dozen pealike blue, pink, purple and white flowers radiating out. The interior of the cluster shows the sticky glands at the base of each flower.

Here's some lovely native prairie orchids growing just south of Calgary last June.
Corallorhiza striata (Striped coralroot) for some reason I caught myself thinking about this little population again, which is still living sleepily under the snow, waiting for the warmth of spring (me too)
