#ADHD students, there are a whole bunch of formal accommodations that can help you, even in classes without exams. Don't assume test accommodations are it in higher ed.

See this table of potential accommodations by type and how each may be useful:

I think EVERY student, graduate students included, should register with the disability office, and here's why.

Here's my advice on how to design your course to be more ADHD-friendly. Strategies like scaffolding for projects and being very consistent with instructions will likely help all students, not only those with #ADHD

Are you a woman in the UK with #ADHD? Dr. Dyi Huijg is doing research centering women's voices. She is particularly looking for women in their twenties, women older than 50, Black women, Brown women, trans women, & queer women.

Just a little visualization method that helps me when my ADHD brain is feeling overwhelmed and I don't know how to sort through the million tasks I should be accomplishing.

Will it help you? Maybe but maybe not
Are there better methods out there? Very likely.

"ADHD Assessment and Treatment Policies among a National Sample of US Colleges and Universities."

Review of 200 higher ed institutions: <20% offer clinical #ADHD diagnoses and 25-50% do not allow their docs to prescribe stimulants.

Decolonize Palestine's Myth database is updated regularly to include the most common myths and talking points. It includes further readings also, for those who want even more information.

Educators can be more inclusive by saying no to inconsistent deadlines, poorly organized reminders and directions, bans on laptops or doodling in class, convoluted multi-part questions, and other forms of academic ableism.

If you're heading back to classes today, pack lots of snacks, print out your schedule and campus map and download copies to your phone, and don't be afraid to drop classes with ableist professors. Plus, pick out some back-up classes if you haven't already!

The first meeting of the Intersectional Neurodiversity Reading Group is on ADHD and academic accommodations, so should be relevant to a decent number of folks following me. Dyi has some juicy topics in store for us. Please share with those who may be interested & sign up for the mailing list!

Dr Dyi Huijg runs the ADHD Reading Group and it restarts 2 Feb 2024, 3-4.30pm UK time. Everyone welcome!
Join the mailing list: intersect-nd-dis-rg.wixsite.com/rg-site/regi...
P.S. It's okay to sign up and attend some meetings and not others, or attend none at all and just see the readings!

If you're looking for crisis support lines that you can safely share with your students, here are three I know of. Trans Lifeline is unavailable Dec 18-Jan 1 (more info in link).

ADHD students, the end of the term is a great time for body doubling. Working next to someone else can make a huge difference in focus. Yes, it's simple. No, you don't have to be working on the same thing. Find options on Eventbrite or check out some here: theadhdacademic.weebly.com/learning--ad...

I was whining on here that I needed the Formalizer tool to have an option to make your text less snarky.

It exists; it's even called "less snarky." Click on "more professional" and it's a drop-down box. Look at all of the options! AI helping neurodivergent folks.

Whether it's a literature review, deciphering long articles, or programming in R, I can't stay on top of all the good advice on learning & higher ed. ADHD folks, if there are resources you found useful when learning, consider letting me know so I can share.

@forrt.bsky.social has a neurodiversity team. This is another potential place for community for ADHD, autistic, bipolar, & other neurodivergent folks. They are working on multiple projects, have a Slack, and academics can add themselves to the Neurodivergent Authors Database.

Another potential resource for neurodivergent folks in higher education is ReASoN. If you're looking for community, check them out. They're relatively new, based out of the UK, and they have online meetings. Check out ReASoN's website for more resources and recordings:

Another great disability resource is IncludEdu, a website for assistive technology. It's built for an audience of educators/younger learners BUT do not let that fool you. I've discovered lots of great plugins there. You can search by Apple, Microsoft, or Google. Good source for accommodation ideas.

All The Things ADHD is a great podcast by two academics: @readywriting.bsky.social and Aimée Morrison. Good starting episodes: S5 E8 Neurodivergent college survival tips, S4 E13: What if, wait for it, we didn’t have to fundamentally change who we are to be successful?, and S4 E21: The Sh*t Sandwich.

Disabled In Higher Ed's "Disabled in STEM/Academia Literature" spreadsheet is a collection of articles, blogs, etc. that may interest disabled students, staff, faculty, and those with an interest in accessibility in higher education. Bonus for ADHD folks: there are summaries of what each item is.

Disabled Academic Collective did a thread a while ago on digital resources for disabled folks who wanted to find community online. They compiled the answers into "Community Resources" and posted it to their Resources page.

Another resource is @disabledinstem.bsky.social's Accessibility Review Form. This disability resource is for students (although I would love a version for staff/faculty...). It's relatively new but a great place to check for academic ableism, success stories, and students can (& should) add to it.

The Job Accommodation Network is the first place I recommend people check out when thinking about potential disability accommodations. You can search by barrier or by disability or by job task. For example, a graduate student could search for writing accommodations for their thesis.
