Filled a garden bed with aged compost that hadn’t gotten hot enough…all summer I’ve been pulling tomato starts out, it was refreshing to find a volunteer petunia on this morning’s walk thru the garden.

Grown this year from a rhizome cutting, living large on the patio currently, hoping to see it bloom this winter.

Begonia heracleifolia
So many attributes that have me hard for this begonia from the leaf shape, to the hairy petioles to the color. And it’s thick

Shh…don’t tell the other pots, but every fall this is my favorite basket of tuberous begonias.
As the weather cools each September in the Pacific Northwest my begonias seem to sense it by putting off a finally effort to impress.

Hibiscus moscheutos 'Midnight Marvel' PP24079
My jungle has grown so this is a hard to see plant, and sadly forgotten, originally planted in full sun, its leaves have turned green.
I will rectify this soon so it can be displayed in a worthy place.

Thinking about gardening?
Not sure if you have the time?
Onions, garlic and leeks can be a low cost way to give it a go. Plant, water occasionally , harvest when ready.
This is about $4 in starts, I did little more than plant, water, weed the area.
This was gratifying.

Begonias.
The flowers come and go thru the summer, they really get popping as autumn arrives, but those leaves….

Another day, another dahlia post.
This beast keeps pushing out those amazing blooms!

As my garden grows and evolves from year to year, I’m still taken back by the views from different angles and locations.
Color, variety, a bloom or just some foliage.

Canna Ehemanii
Hot-pink almost magenta pendant blooms.
A vintage variety, totally worth acquiring if you have the chance.
Acquired from Horn Canna Farm.

Best grown where it can be left inground as this one doesn’t like to be stored for the winter.

Brugmansia ‘Charles Grimaldi’
Not sure if it’s the weather, regular care , or 🤷🏼‍♂️ but my Angels Trumpets are all over 8ft tall this year. Loving it!

But omg that sweet sweet scent ……

Update to the Cardoon the rain destroyed.
A Florist career definitely isn’t in my future , but these things smell quite amazing. Notice I was able to save and stake some the Cardoon as those hadn’t ‘snapped’.

Hmmm…. Seems I have a casualty from the rain storm.
Time to put my florist hat on I guess and enjoy those blooms table side a while.

This is my bashful hibiscus. It will never bloom when I have guests. Only my wife I I can ever enjoy these amazing flowers.
Last bloom dropped Tuesday, Wednesday we hosted a garden party , today a new bloom appears.

Thinking these might be the closest thing I can get to having parrots visit my tropical themed , northwest garden 🙃
August 9, 2025 at 8:55 PM
As much for my own benefit as for those planty folks that may visit. Ive created labels and brochures for self guided tours of my garden (and visible so I don’t have to climb fences or bend over for plant names 🙃)
Gardening was easier before puppies.

Visitors to my garden never know what I’m gonna offer. An always changing, growing collection of propagations, divisions or just plants that didn’t fit the spot so they are potted up for new homes.

Only thing better than gardening is sharing and growing the passion in others.

The flowers never cease to amaze me, the scent that fills the yard is out of this world. The pink one is the first to greet me when I enter the garden …simply amazing the Brugmansia.

Ahh my passion vine is setting fruit…. Was disheartened to learn this variety has a bland almost bad flavor….oh well. Maybe I’ll put them out for guests to see the reaction when they ripen.

So glad Swan Island Dahlias is so far away 😝. Easier to resist the urge to get more amazing tubers when stuck with the catalog. I’ve since lost the tag, but pretty sure this is Maki.
If you can make it to Canby Oregon, Dahlia festival is going on now. So worth a visit.

Buddleia butterfly bush. Giving a little love to my white butterfly bush. Each spring I cut it to about 5-6ft and by mid August it’s towering at 10-12ft for a brief burst of white to brighten the corner of the yard.
Pollinators seem to love it.
