One of my sadder memories from the U.S. was attending a union meeting and finally realising that many of my fellow stewards didn't see me or others like me as human like them. and that there were no words I could use to change that.

It was very weird.

Also I don't think we should have any discussions *about* immigration before we come to an agreement that we are human beings. Not economic units, not enemy combatants - people.

Until then it's all moot

Lemme be succinct for a minute then I'll log off because this is pointless:

The pro-natalist thing is pretty firmly rooted in racism and xenophobia. Anti-immigration sentiment.

You are doing a service to it if you try to remove that component and debate its merits in isolation.

There’s lot of Covid going around at the moment, again. I don’t qualify for NHS jabs, which are now very restricted, but I just paid £90 for one at my local pharmacy. As a freelancer, that’s a lot less expensive than having to take a week or two off if I get ill, let alone risking long term issues.

Adelita Grijalva won her election fair and square.

Now House Speaker Mike Johnson is refusing to swear her in because she would be the final signature to release the Epstein files.

Mr. Speaker, respect democracy. Obey the law. Swear Representative Grijalva in immediately.

I'm really pleased it went well (also that he asked rather than imposed!)

Migration is hard, even on the relatively easy setting (which is how I've made my moves). IMO, it carries an obligation to other migrants - preferably to help others, but at least not to burn their bridges.

Also, resistance takes many forms. Removing your labour and resources is one of them

I hate that people do this incredibly difficult, painful thing in countries that work hard to make it MORE difficult and painful. It's obscene to me.

Did he check if you were religious first (because that'd give me the ick as well as the desire to run)? I hope the surgery went well.

Also, if 'the political climate' is why they nixed it - how absolutely craven of them.

When this is all over, and it comes out that he is/was indeed addled and advisors were feeding him lies and ai... it's vital we don't let anyone use that information to absolve him of any responsibility for every horrific act the admin is doing.

The pro-infection advocates have now reached the stage that they are denying saying that kids can be used to boost adult immunity… by infecting them and spreading it into households… schools.

Too late now. It’s on the record.

The shame of it.

Before Covid, I used to get 2-3 colds a year, and each time I'd spend the next 3-6 weeks hacking up a lung. It wasn't fun.

Since I started wearing a respirator consistently, it's not just Covid that I don't catch.

1. I've had a surprising number of conversations about Covid-19 over the past week or so, all sparked by the fact that I was, as always, wearing an FFP2 respirator. People in healthcare facilities, taxi drivers, people on trains and buses.
theartofcharts.bsky.social
Yep. It's always been about racism.

When Michael Howard did his coy 'It's not racist to impose limits on immigration' posters, Labour's response should've been a full-throated 'Yes, it fucking is'.

Instead they hemmed and hawed like Lord Haw-haw - and look where it got them.

It interested me, 'cos I think she's fairly level-headed, and both the cascading variety and the mixed variety of collapse have happened elsewhere. And I'm not really a proponent of U.S. exceptionalism: it's part of how they got in this mess.

They fall apart so hard...

Interesting analysy from Cy Canterel. It feels like a good time to rewatch The Big Short and Chernobyl.

A general reminder that if you can, it's good to keep emergency supplies on hand.

We already had robo-debt - and it killed people. We don't need robo-policy.

This report - ironically about the IT system used to manage the dole - hallucinated academic references and invented quotes from judges and made up cases.

DEWR should be trashing it, not defending it.

Deloitte will issue a partial refund to the government after admitting that artificial intelligence had been used in the creation of a report littered with errors.

And it's very much a tactic: they keep on shitting in the fountain of truth; decent people end up spending time trying to filter out their excrement, instead of being able to use their time more productively.

It's deliberate, disingenuous witlessness. It's a mistake, I think, to assume any kind of sincerity on the part of people like this.

These are spectacularly ignorant comments by Lam regarding people seeking asylum. For one thing, they massively ignore that most refugees remain in their region of origin. Most refugees aren't hopping on a flight to the UK, and most wouldn't even if they could.

www.politicshome.com/news/article...
'If you take something like asylum, the whole concept of asylum – it’s a 20th-and-before-century idea for a 21st-century world,” she says.

“At least historically, you think about things like ballerinas defecting from the Soviet Union when they go on tours to the US or whatever. As soon as they get to a safe country, they can claim asylum…

"Whereas, if your only gating item for whether somebody is allowed to claim asylum is, ‘Can they get to your country?’, in the world that we live in now, everybody on the face of the earth can get to our country within 24 to 72 hours.”

We don't, there will be a new (and hopefully better) normal after this, that said, for the rest of our lives we'll have to be aware a non-trivial number of neighbors and fellows voted for actual fascism, and that's always going to be a bummer

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

And will be generally just having a look around various online neighbourhoods...
