As usual, too many compromises for the drivers. Now suits no one

They are proposing to remove every part of existing pedestrian protection while maintaining existing levels of parking and vehicle access. It will work exactly as designed
thebonnieloon.bsky.social
Move the cyclist between the 2 cars in the background and you can see a fundamental flaw The Council ignored. It doesn't change the fundamental design of the street and you STILL risk being doored/or close passed. Only confident/experienced cyclists will use this @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social
A visual of Queensferry night street. There are two cyclists in the foreground and 3 pedestrians walking. There is a car in the back ground driving away and a car parked at one side.
thebonnieloon.bsky.social
It was put to them that that already happens at the top of the High Street now and if they designed it like this, the same thing will happen (and you see it at Elm Row). They've ignored this and every suggestion Spokes put to them.
thebonnieloon.bsky.social
Hardly "transformation" The Council lost Sustrans funding as it has too much car parking, retains vehicle access at all times, squeezes a tiny unprotected cycle lane and protects no pedestrian spaces from vehicles. A massive waste of money and only adds to the Council's "opportunity missed" list

We've began work on our £3.5m transformation project of Queensferry High Street and the town centre.

These improvements will create a safer, more accessible, and vibrant environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
Digital visualisation of the project improvements.
thebonnieloon.bsky.social
None of them. They loss Sustrans funding as it has too much car parking but they managed to find the money anyway. IT's going to look nicer but will resolve none of the issues with the current high street. A massive waste of money

South Queensferry residents already suffer from the effects of excessive traffic with actual and perceived risk
to life, excessive noise, pollution and negative health impacts of increasing levels of inactivity, especially
amongst younger generations. With over 1600 properties built or planned to be built in just a few years within
the town, Edinburgh Council must act now to make active travel a more attractive option for people to choose
to travel to, from and around South Queensferry.
Spokes broadly welcome these proposals as we believe this could potentially be the start of what is required to
provide adults and children with the opportunity for active travel which for most does not currently exist.
There is an opportunity for a wider active travel network throughout South Queensferry and these proposals as
the currently stand exclude other areas of South Queensferry, for example other schools around the town. All
children and adults should have the right to exercise for free and to travel actively safely and we would urge
the Council, the Scottish Government and other funding partners to take a proactive approach to planning this
(and other) active travel networks, not just individual routes that are not joined up one of the main proposals maps in the consultation, showing the active travel route beside and crossing a road

Thanks for always arguing for common sense Claire. It does rub salt into the wounds when you see where the protection was and still should be. (I'm lucky to have an e bike and a bit of confidence to stick my bike in the way to try and prevent close passes but shouldn’t have to be that way)
thebonnieloon.bsky.social
Amongst the permanent design features on the Mound that have designed in close passes, this temporary one also does the job 🤯 @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social @cllrcmiller.bsky.social @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social
A protected cycle lane with a set of temporary traffic lights at red with a cyclist waiting. In the lane beside them a car is also waiting. The furthest away lane has been closed with cones and a sign

Not just for people in South Queensferry. A good design that with some tweaks could be outstanding and maybe even the start of a decent network. Consultation ends 10th Oct

The price tag to upgrade the entire UK to cheap, clean energy is £319 billion. That’s just 8 times what the UK Gov had to spend capping rocketing gas prices in winter 2022/3 👇

Instead of pouring money away propping up yesterday’s dirty tech and wrecking our home, why not invest for a better future?
sioldridge.bsky.social
UK Gov experts have shown that ending fossil fuels will save the UK nearly £40 billion a year and rising.
Electrification saves all the heat wasted from burning gas & oil.

The £319 billion investment needed is only 8x what the Gov spent shielding users from high gas prices in 2022/3. Bargain! 🧵1/2
