In this chart of completed cohort fertility by age. Aside from the blip of the baby boom, 2-2.5 children among all cohorts of women who have reached 40-50 years old.
Chart showing completed fertility - as in average number of children born - to women over time by birth year. It starts with birth year 1920 and goes to birth year 1980. There are two lines - one for women at 40 and one for women at 50 - and they are essentially together until about 1950, when they start diverging again. But the trend is the same - 2.5 children to women born in 1920, climbing to about 3.3 children for women born between 1930 and 1940, and then back down to 2 to 2.5 children for women born in later years. The average number of children hasn't really changed despite Total Fertility Rate dropping - women are just delaying them until later.
